Statement as of 9:59 PM CST on December 23, 2009 ... Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from 6 am Thursday to 6 PM CST Friday... A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from 6 am Thursday to 6 PM CST Friday. * Timing... rain will rapidly change to snow early Thursday morning. Some light accumulations of freezing drizzle are possible as the rain changes to snow. * Total snow accumulations... snowfall accumulations of six inches will be possible by Friday afternoon... with locally higher amounts possible especially across northeast Kansas. Heavy snow will move eastward through the day Thursday affecting all areas by Thursday afternoon. * Winds... northerly winds will increase to 25 to 35 mph with gusts as high as 45 mph on Thursday into Friday. This will result in reduced visibilities... with near blizzard conditions at times... as well as blowing and drifting snow. * Impacts... travel will become very difficult Thursday through Friday. Drifting of snow across roadways is likely. Precautionary/preparedness actions... Accumulations of snow are forecast that will make travel dangerous. If you must travel... keep an extra flashlight... food... and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.
