... On this date in weather history...
In 1933... the temperature at the Riverside Ranger station in Montana plunged to 66 below zero to establish not only a state record... but a National record as well that stood until 1954. Wyoming also set a state record low when the Mercury tumbled to 63 below in Moran. In 1934... temperatures tumbled to 51 below in Vanderbilt to set a record for the state of Michigan. In Stillwater New York... the Mercury plunged to 52 below to set a record for the Empire state. In 1987... eastern Massachusetts was whipped by a severe blizzard that produced gusts around 80 mph... around 2 feet of snow... and 8 foot drifts in Cape Cod. It had been the worst blizzard to hit Cape Cod since 1957.
