A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 6 PM CST Wednesday. A blizzard watch remains in effect from Wednesday evening through Thursday afternoon.
* Freezing rain... freezing drizzle and possibly sleet are expected to develop across portions of southwest Kansas tonight mainly east of a Hugoton to Garden City to Ness City line... before transitioning to areas of snow during the afternoon on Wednesday.
* Accumulations of sleet or freezing rain could range around one tenth of an inch... with close to one quarter of an inch in the Hays and LaCrosse area before the mixed precipitation changes to snow. Snow accumulations Wednesday through Thursday are expected to range from 2 to 4 inches over most of southwest Kansas with locally higher amounts up to 6 inches.
* Strong northwest winds of 25 to 40 mph are expected to develop late Wednesday night... continuing into Thursday which will promote widespread significant blowing and drifting snow. Blizzard or near blizzard conditions will be possible at times.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
A blizzard watch means there is a potential for falling and/or blowing snow with strong winds and extremely poor visibilities. This can lead to whiteout conditions and make travel very dangerous.
A Winter Weather Advisory means that periods of snow... sleet... or freezing rain will cause travel difficulties. Be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibilities... and use caution while driving.
