Statement as of 3:00 PM CST on December 21, 2009 ... Blizzard watch now in effect from late Wednesday night through Friday morning... The blizzard watch is now in effect from late Wednesday night through Friday morning. * Timing... the rain and drizzle will change over to snow in central Kansas by Wednesday night and continue to fall through Thursday night. * Winds/visibility... very strong north winds of 30 to 40 mph combined with heavy snow will reduce visibilities to less than a quarter of a mile at times. * Snow accumulations... of 4 to 8 inches can be expected with the highest accumulations in central Kansas. * Other impacts... the snow and high wind speeds may cause whiteout conditions to occur which could make travel impossible across the watch area. Significant blowing and drifting of snow and bitter cold wind chill readings will also affect the area. Precautionary/preparedness actions... A blizzard watch means there is a potential for falling and/or blowing snow with strong winds and extremely poor visibilities. This can lead to whiteout conditions and make travel very dangerous.
