The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a Wind Chill Advisory... which is in effect until 11 am CST Wednesday. A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 6 am CST Wednesday.
Areas of light to moderate snow will continue across central Kansas into the evening hours. Additional snowfall accumulations of 1 to 3 inches can be expected by mid-evening... bringing total accumulations to between 6 and 10 inches.
Meanwhile... as the system departs later this evening... strong and gusty northwest winds of 25 to 30 mph... with gusts to 40 mph... will develop across the area. This will lead to significant blowing and drifting of newly fallen snow... and usher in bitter cold temperatures. Near blizzard conditions will be possible at times due to the blowing snow.
Bitter cold wind chill readings from minus 15 to minus 20 degrees will prevail from this evening through Wednesday morning across central Kansas.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
A Winter Storm Warning means significant winter weather is expected or occurring. This will make travel very hazardous or impossible.
A Wind Chill Advisory means that very cold air and strong winds will combine to generate low wind chills. This will result in frostbite and lead to hypothermia if precautions are not taken. If you must venture outdoors... make sure you wear a hat and gloves.
