Statement as of 8:17 PM CDT on July 12, 2009
... Storm damage survey of Manhattan Kansas 12 July 2009... National Weather Service meteorologists conducted a survey of storm damage across Manhattan Kansas produced form early morning thunderstorms on July 12, 2009. It was determined that the damage sustained across the city was produce by straight line winds caused by a microburst. The thunderstorms with the damaging winds moved across the city between 550 and 600 am this morning. The damage occurred along a 6 mile long path that was as much as a mile wide... and winds speeds associated with the thunderstorms were estimated to be up to 80 mph. Virtually all of the damage indicators were blown in one direction towards the east southeast... indicative of straight line winds. Some of the greatest damage occurred over areas just south of the Kansas State University Campus along Anderson Ave... within neighborhoods around Central Park... and residential areas just west of downtown Manhattan. The damage consisted of tree limbs greater than 6 inches in diameter broken off... trees uprooted or snapped... and structural damage. For more information and images from the survey... visit our website at www.Weather.Gov/Topeka /all lower case/.
