Weather Summary
Weather Underground midday recap for Tuesday, February 14, 2012.

Multiple areas of wet weather developed over most of the nation on Tuesday. In the East, a weak trough of low pressure brought snow, freezing rain, and rain showers to the Upper Ohio River Valley, Central and Northern Appalachians, and the Northeast. Snowfall accumulation over the region remained light and varied around an inch in most places. Meanwhile, a cold front extended south from this system and extended over the Southeast. This pulled in moisture and energy from the Gulf of Mexico, and triggered showers and thunderstorms over the Gulf coast. Heaviest rainfall accumulation reached up to 0.96 inches in Key West, Florida.

Out West, light snow showers developed across most of the Rockies as a trough moved in from the West Coast. This brought light snow to the Northern and Central Rockies, with winter weather advisories issued for parts of Utah, Colorado, and northern New Mexico. The southern side of this system brought a messy combination of rain and snow to Arizona and New Mexico. Heaviest snowfall accumulation ranged from 3 to 5 inches in parts of Utah. Further West, a low pressure system offshore pushed a cold front into the Pacific Northwest, which produced more rain and high elevation snow showers.

Winter Weather Advisory
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 3:24 PM CST on February 14, 2012

... Winter Weather Advisory in effect from 3 am to noon CST
Wednesday...

The National Weather Service in Hastings has issued a Winter
Weather Advisory for light icing... which is in effect from 3 am
to noon CST Wednesday.

* Impact... slick roads will make driving potentially difficult.
Also... locally dense fog will will reduce visibilities in some
areas to less than a quarter mile.

* Precipitation type/hazard... freezing drizzle will develop late
tonight along with locally dense fog. Light freezing rain and
locally dense fog will be possible through much of the morning
hours.

* Precipitation accumulation... a very thin glaze of ice is
anticipated for much of the area by Wednesday morning.

* Timing... although the potential for light icing and dense fog
are possible between 3 am and noon... the hours between 5 am and
10 am are expected to be the most treacherous.

* Location... light icing and locally dense fog will affect north
central Kansas.

* Uncertainty... there is some uncertainty as to how quickly
precipitation will develop. If onset occurs later in the
morning... then icing will be potentially less significant.

* Temperatures... low temperatures will be in the mid to upper
20s... rising into the mid to upper 30s by noon.

* Winds... becoming brisk from the north toward noon.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Winter Weather Advisory means that periods of sleet or freezing
rain will cause travel difficulties. Be prepared for slippery
roads and limited visibilities... and use caution while driving.
