The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a dense fog
advisory... which is in effect until 10 am CDT this morning.

* Timing... dense fog will affect the entire area this
morning... with conditions expected to improve after 10 am.

* Impacts... visibilities of less than one quarter mile are
likely.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A dense fog advisory means visibilities will frequently be
reduced to less than one quarter mile. If driving... slow down.
Use your headlights and leave plenty of distance ahead of you.

... On this date in weather history...

In 2003... tragedy struck the Kansas Turnpike... when the
deadly Jacob creek flash flood inundated a one quarter
mile section of the Interstate... 12 miles southwest of
Emporia. Seven vehicles were swept off the Turnpike.
One was a minivan with a family of six... of which five
perished. A sixth fatality resulted when a man's vehicle
stalled. In 1915... the temperature in Salina plunged to
42 degrees to set a record low for the city in the month
of August.
