Public Information Statement
Statement as of 6:00 am CST on December 26, 2014

...On this date in weather history...

In 1987...an ice storm ravaged the Southern Plains from northwest Texas to southwest Missouri.A mixture of sleet and freezing rain covered two thirds of Oklahoma. Hardest hit was a 40 mile wide band that Cut Through The Heart of the state from Duncan...through Norman and Tulsa...to extreme northeast Oklahoma. These areas were coated with 1 to 2 inches of ice that severed power to around 75,000 homes...of which 25,000 were still without power 1 week later. Half of Springfield lost power for 24 hours as southwest Missouri was turned into a skating rink. Damage to trees and power lines was compared to that caused by 100 tornadoes. Seven people were killed.
