Weather Summary
Weather Underground Forecast for Thursday, February 23, 2012.

Unsettled weather will continue across the northern half of the nation on Thursday. IN the East, a disturbance from the Midwest will lift northeastward through the Ohio Valley into the Northeast. The system will bring widely scattered rain showers, periods of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms from the Tennessee and Ohio Valley into the Mid-Atlantic. A mix of precipitation is expected in the Northeast Thursday through Friday. Expect periods of localized significant wet snowfall across the higher elevation and east of Lake Ontario. In addition to snow, periods of heavy rainfall are anticipated in much of New England. To the south, there will be a slight risk of severe thunderstorms ahead of an associated cold front late Thursday into Thursday night across parts of the Lower Ohio and Tennessee Valleys into the Gulf States. Isolated supercells in these regions may produce large hail, damaging wind gusts, and tornadoes.

Behind this activity, energy from the Northwest will advance into the Upper Midwest. Moisture spreading into the Plains will aid in producing rain and snow in the Northern Plains and rain showers in the Mid-Mississippi Valley and western Ohio Valley. As this system advances southeastward, expect areas of snow showers to persist over portion of the Northwest and Central Rockies.

Elsewhere, warm temperatures will remain in place from the Central and Southern Plains through the Mid-Atlantic, before the next trough of low pressure arrives Friday with cooler weather.

Nowcast as of 12:19 am CST on February 23, 2012
Patchy fog has developed across portions of north central Illinois this past evening...with visibility currently ranging from 2 to 4 miles. Although...patchy dense fog with visibility near one quarter mile has been reported by numerous spotters from DeKalb to Elgin. These localized areas of dense fog will continue and possibly even expand overnight. In addition...isolated light rain showers will be possible over the next couple of hours...especially for areas in far northeast Illinois. Many locations currently remain at or just below freezing...so any fog or light rain may result in a glaze forming on some Road surfaces...especially elevated surfaces. Anyone traveling tonight should be aware of possible slippery Road conditions. Be especially cautious on elevated Road surfaces such as bridges and overpasses which typically see ice formation before other areas.

Winter Storm Watch
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 8:57 PM CST on February 22, 2012

... Winter Storm Watch in effect from Thursday evening through
Friday morning...

The National Weather Service in Chicago has issued a Winter Storm
Watch... which is in effect from Thursday evening through Friday
morning.

* Timing... rain is expected to change to wet snow across northern
Illinois toward evening Thursday... and by early evening across
Northwest Indiana. Snow may become heavy at times particularly
during the evening hours... before gradually tapering off from
west to east late Thursday night into early Friday morning.

* Accumulations... in excess of 6 inches are possible in some areas.

* Main impact... heavy wet snow may fall at rates greater than an
inch per hour Thursday evening. This will likely result in quick
accumulation of wet snow on roads... resulting in slippery and
potentially hazardous travel conditions.

* Other impacts... in addition to accumulation and slippery travel
impacts... strong winds will result in wind whipped heavy wet
snow causing severely reduced visibilities Thursday evening.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Winter Storm Watch means there is a potential for significant
snow... sleet... or ice accumulations that may impact travel.
Continue to monitor the latest forecasts.
