... A cool start to the month of July...
The start of July has been rather cool across northern Indiana... Northwest Ohio and southwest lower Michigan. Many areas did not see temperatures get out of the 60s on the first or second day of the month. As a matter of fact... South Bend set a record on July 1st for the coolest maximum temperature on that date. The high was only 65 degrees which broke the previous record of 67 set in 1924.
A look at the record books shows this indeed has been one of the coolest starts to July in our area since weather records began. At South Bend... the average temperature for the period of July 1st through July 4th was 63.8 degrees... 8.5 degrees below normal. This ranks as the 3rd coolest start to July in the South Bend area since records began in 1893. The coolest average temperature for July 1st through 4th was 60.1 degrees set in 1924... and the second coolest period was in 1940 when the average temperature was 62.8 degrees. The high temperature on July 4th at South Bend was only 71 degrees. This ranked as the 6th coolest high temperature for that date. The coolest high temperature on July 4th was recorded in 1997 when the high was only 63 degrees.
At Fort Wayne... the average temperature for the period of July 1st through July 4th was 64.9 degrees... 8.1 degrees below normal. This ranks as the 4th coolest start to July in The Fort Wayne area since records began in 1897. The coolest average temperature for July 1st through 4th was 61.5 degrees set in 1924... the second coolest period was in 1979 when the average temperature was 63.8 degrees... and the third coolest start was in 1945 when the average temperature was 64.1 degrees. The high temperature on July 4th at Fort Wayne was only 72 degrees. This tied for the 4th coolest high temperature for that date. The coolest high temperature on July 4th was recorded in 1997 when the high was only 67 degrees.
