Weather Summary
Weather Underground Forecast for Friday, February 10, 2012.

Expect active weather to move into the East on Friday, as a trough of low pressure moves from the Southern Plains and into the Eastern Valleys. Flow around this system will pull moisture and energy in from the Gulf of Mexico. This will produce scattered showers and thunderstorms over the Southern Plains and Lower Mississippi River Valley throughout the day. There is a slight chance that these storms will turn severe with strong winds and heavy downpours. The northern side of this system will push a cold front into the Midwest, which will move through the Great Lakes and into the Ohio River Valley. Expect light and scattered snow showers to develop along the front as it passes through northern Michigan and into the eastern Ohio Valley and the Central Appalachians. Warmer temperatures ahead of this system will allow for rain showers to develop in parts of the Mid-Atlantic states and the Tennessee Valley.

Out West, a weak trough of low pressure moves onshore from the Pacific Ocean, bringing some moisture onshore with it. This will produce more rain and high elevation snow showers over the Pacific Northwest. Some of this moisture will stretch southward into northern California, allowing for light rain and high elevation snow showers to spread into the northern Sierras.

Lake Effect Snow Warning
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 1:07 PM CST on February 10, 2012

... Lake effect snow warning remains in effect until 4 am CST
Saturday...

* timing... widespread moderate snow will develop this
afternoon... especially after 3 PM... with 1 to 2 inches of
accumulation expected by early evening. However... an intense
lake effect snow band is expected to develop by mid to late
evening and continue into the overnight hours before shifting
east into Porter County Indiana by sunrise Saturday.

* Snow accumulations... total snowfall of 6 to 12 inches is likely
where the heaviest lake effect snow band occurs. Isolated totals
of up to 18 inches are possible... especially in Eastern Lake
County. Snowfall rates within the most intense snow band later
this evening into the overnight hours could exceed 2 to 3 inches
per hour. Due to the localized nature of lake effect
snow... accumulations can and often do vary significantly over
very short distances.

* Impacts... accumulating snowfall will likely make travel
hazardous later this afternoon. During the evening travel will
likely become extremely dangerous if not nearly impossible
within the most intense snow band due to the combination of
near zero visibility and extremely heavy snowfall rates. Strong
north winds gusting to between 30 and 40 mph at times will
result in considerable blowing and drifting snow with periods of
whiteout conditions.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A lake effect snow warning means significant amounts of lake-
effect snow are forecast that will make travel very hazardous or
impossible. Lake-effect snow showers typically align themselves
in bands and will likely be intense enough to drop 1 to several
inches of snow per hour for several hours. Visibilities vary
greatly and can drop to zero within minutes. Travel is strongly
discouraged. Commerce could be severely impacted. If you must
travel... keep an extra flashlight... food... and water in your
vehicle in case of an emergency.
