Weather Summary
Weather Underground Forecast for Sunday, May 27, 2012. More interesting weather for many parts of the country is expected Sunday. Subtropical Storm Beryl will continue on its path toward the northeast coast of Florida near Georgia. It is expected to make landfall with tropical storm strength winds either late Sunday night or early Monday morning. This storm will not be a signficant wind threat, and the rain associated with it will mostly be a blessing to this region as it has suffered through an exceptional drought.

Elsewhere, an intense heat wave will continue for the Plains and Southeast while also spreading northward into the Ohio Valley and Upper Midwest. Maximum temperature records are most likely to be broken for many areas as temperatures will soar into the 90s and 100s. Even more dangerous will be the heat index values over 100 degrees. The heat index tells you how hot the air feels. The more humid the weather, the higher the heat index will soar. Thankfully, many areas will not experience the extremely high humidity common during the Summer months.

In the West, a strong storm will move through the Northern Rockies and into the Dakotas. This storm will bring widespread rain and even some snow from Idaho through Minnesota. The associated cold front will move through the Plains, possibly instigating some strong thunderstorms that could become severe.

The Northeast will rise into the 70s and 80s, while the Southeast and Southern Plains will see temperatures in the 90s and 100s. The Northwest will rise into the 70s.

... Record heat this Holiday weekend...

The hot Memorial Day weekend will continue... with record or near
record high temperatures in the mid and upper 90s likely in most
locations. Due to a lack of moisture... heat index values should stay
close to the actual air temperatures... generally in the upper 90s
to near 100 degrees. This will be the hottest air this area has seen
so far this year. The last time it was this hot... was back in the
early part of September 2011.

People should be prepared to deal with the effects of this
prolonged period of hot weather. Follow the basic rules of heat
safety to keep from becoming overheated. Drink plenty of
water... wear light colored... light weight clothing... and avoid
strenuous activities during the hottest part of the day. Take
frequent breaks and be sure to put on a high spf sunscreen to
limit the potential for sunburn. Make sure pets have plenty of
fresh water.

In addition... with moderate to severe drought conditions in
place... the risk of wildfires will be increased somewhat. Caution
should be exercised with any outdoor burning this weekend.

... Air quality alert in effect today and Sunday...

The Evansville environmental protection agency and the Vanderburgh
County health department have issued an ozone alert... in effect
today and Sunday...

A code Orange air quality alert for ozone has been issued. Ambient
concentrations of ozone may reach or exceed the level of the
National ambient air quality standards for ozone. Within a few hours
or days... exposure to higher levels of ozone can cause lung and
throat irritation... shortness of breath... increase the frequency of
asthma attacks and aggravated respiratory diseases such as...
asthma... emphysema... and bronchitis. Children... active adults... and
people with respiratory diseases should limit prolonged outdoor
exertion especially during the afternoon and evening when ozone
levels are the highest. No open burning is allowed during ozone
alerts.
