Weather Summary
Weather Underground Forecast for Friday, February 10, 2012.

Expect active weather to move into the East on Friday, as a trough of low pressure moves from the Southern Plains and into the Eastern Valleys. Flow around this system will pull moisture and energy in from the Gulf of Mexico. This will produce scattered showers and thunderstorms over the Southern Plains and Lower Mississippi River Valley throughout the day. There is a slight chance that these storms will turn severe with strong winds and heavy downpours. The northern side of this system will push a cold front into the Midwest, which will move through the Great Lakes and into the Ohio River Valley. Expect light and scattered snow showers to develop along the front as it passes through northern Michigan and into the eastern Ohio Valley and the Central Appalachians. Warmer temperatures ahead of this system will allow for rain showers to develop in parts of the Mid-Atlantic states and the Tennessee Valley.

Out West, a weak trough of low pressure moves onshore from the Pacific Ocean, bringing some moisture onshore with it. This will produce more rain and high elevation snow showers over the Pacific Northwest. Some of this moisture will stretch southward into northern California, allowing for light rain and high elevation snow showers to spread into the northern Sierras.

Lake Effect Snow Watch
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 9:09 PM CST on February 09, 2012

... Lake effect snow watch remains in effect from Friday afternoon
through Saturday afternoon...

* timing... lake effect snow is expected to develop Friday
afternoon and continue through Friday night and Saturday morning
before shifting east of the watch area by mid afternoon
Saturday. North to northeast winds will initially focus the most
numerous snow showers along the Illinois shore Friday
afternoon... with the focus then expected to shift more into lake
and Porter counties in Northwest Indiana overnight Friday night.
Winds will eventually back to the northwest on Saturday...
allowing the bands of lake effect snow to move east of Porter
County in the early afternoon. The period of heaviest lake
effect snow and fastest accumulation will occur from late Friday
afternoon into the predawn hours of Saturday.

* Snow accumulations... while lake effect snow can be highly
localized... current forecasts are for total accumulations from 3
to 5 inches in far northeast Cook County... 4 to 7 inches across
downtown Chicago and the south suburbs... with 5 to 8 inches from
the far southeast side of Chicago east across central and
Northern Lake and Porter counties of Northwest Indiana. Isolated
higher amounts are possible if the heaviest snow bands can
become stationary for an extended period of time.

* Other impacts... slippery snow covered roads... intense snowfall
leading to rapid snow accumulation and severely reduced
visibility... blowing and drifting snow... and single digit wind
chills.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A lake effect snow watch means there is a potential for a large
amount of snow in only a few hours. Visibilities and depth of
snow can vary greatly... impacting travel significantly. Continue
to monitor the latest forecasts.
