Weather Summary
Weather Underground midday recap for Friday, February 10, 2012.

Snow showers moved through the Midwest, thunderstorms developed in the South, and cold air poured into the Plains on Friday. A trough of low pressure moved eastward from the Southern Plains and continued to push a cold front eastward, which extended from the Great Lakes into the Gulf states. The southern end of this system pulled moisture in from the Gulf of Mexico and triggered scattered showers and thunderstorms over the Lower Mississippi Valley. Severe storms have not been reported over the region, but rainfall totals reached over an inch in eastern Texas and southern Louisiana. Heaviest rainfall was reported at Angleton, Texas with a mid-day total of 1.12 inches of rain.

To the North, cool air over the Great Lakes and Midwest allowed for snow showers to develop along the northern side of this cold front. Snowfall accumulation ranged from 1 to 2 inches from southern Wisconsin and Michigan, through Ohio and the Central Appalachians. Some of these areas saw a messy combination of freezing rain and sleet.

Behind this system, a strong ridge of high pressure built into the Plains. This pushed in cool and dry air from central Canada and brought cold and breezy conditions to most of the Plains. The Northern Plains and Upper Midwest saw highs in the single digits, with overnight lows temperatures near 10 degrees below zero. Parts of the Southern Plains saw highs in the 40s, with overnight lows in the 20s.

Out West, a trough of low pressure pushed another cold front toward the Pacific Northwest. Moisture poured in ahead of this system, kicking up more rain showers over Oregon and Washington, with a few sprinkles in northern California. The Northern Rockies saw light and scattered snow showers as moisture reached over Idaho and Montana. Snowfall accumulations ranged from 2 to 4 inches in these areas.

Special Statement
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 10:56 PM CST on February 10, 2012

... Slick roads possible overnight and early Saturday...
... Wind chills in the single digits late tonight...

Scattered flurries are expected overnight... and no additional
accumulations are expected. However... residual moisture on roads
has already begun to freeze... causing numerous accidents in the
Evansville Indiana area. Slick roadways can be expected overnight
and early Saturday across southern Illinois and the Evansville
tri state area. Bridges will be particularly dangerous. Motorists
late tonight and early Saturday should slow down and be prepared
for patches of black ice. Once the sun rises Saturday morning it
should not take long for conditions to improve.

The combination of gusty northwest winds and temperatures near 20
degrees will create wind chills in the single digits above zero
throughout the four state region by sunrise Saturday morning. Wind
chills are not likely to climb above 15 degrees anywhere during
the day Saturday... despite sunny skies.

646 PM CST Fri Feb 10 2012

... Strong cold front moving through area this evening...
... Light snow and sleet possible...

A cold front will move rapidly southeast through southern
Illinois... southeast Missouri... southwest Indiana and west
Kentucky this evening. Temperatures ahead of the front will
generally be in the upper 30s... but as it passes... readings will
quickly fall into the 20s and northwest winds will gust over 20
mph. Wind chills will be in the teens throughout the region by
midnight.

A very narrow band of sleet... snow and rain will accompany
the front as it moves across southern Illinois and the Evansville
tri state region through 9 PM. A period of light snow can be
expected for an hour or two behind the front. Some minor snow
accumulations will be possible... mainly along the Interstate 64
corridor. As temperatures plummet through the 20s tonight... wet
roads may begin to freeze causing some slick spots. Bridges and
lesser travelled roadways will be the first to become slick and
hazardous. Slick conditions will be possible west of a Fairfield to
Benton Illinois line by 8 PM... and throughout the Evansville tri
state by 10 PM.
