Weather Summary
Weather Underground midday recap for Monday, February 13, 2012. A storm raced out of the Rockies and into the Plains on Monday, producing a good shot of Winter weather in the Plains and Mississippi Valley. Winter Weather Advisories were posted from eastern Oklahoma through the western Tennessee Valley in anticipation of several inches of new snow. Snow fell as far north as Minnesota and Michigan, but lighter snow was reported the farther north you went. In the warmer air closer to the Gulf Coast, rain fell in Louisiana and Mississippi.

Wet weather also greeted the West Coast as a Pacific storm slammed into California. This storm lacked a tremendous amount of moisture, but it has been a very dry Winter for the state thus far, and any precipitation is very much welcomed. Up to a foot of new snow is possible from this storm in the higher elevations of the Sierra Nevadas when all is said and done.

The East Coast was dry as a high pressure continued to dominate, but the region experienced another chilly day. By the afternoon, temperatures were still in the 20s and 30s for many areas in New England, while temperatures in the 30s were experience as far south as Arkansas. Morning temperatures were in the 20s in northern Florida.

The Northern Plains rose into the 20s and 30s, while the Northwest saw temperatures in the 30s and 40s. The Southwest rose into the 40s, 50s, and some 60s.

Nowcast as of 4:59 PM CST on February 13, 2012
A north to south oriented band of heavy snow will progress eastward from the Mississippi River across much of southern Illinois...generally along and south of Highway 13...and The Purchase area of west Kentucky through 7 PM. This band of heavy snow may produce an inch or more of accumulation in an hour. 1 to 2 inches can be expected over this area through 7 PM. Otherwise persistent light snow is expected across most of southern Illinois...southeast Missouri and west Kentucky. Some light sleet or snow pellets may mix with the snow along the Tennessee border and in the Missouri bootheel area. Temperatures will quickly drop to just below freezing once the snow begins...so untreated roadways will quickly become slick and hazardous early this evening.
Winter Weather Advisory in effect until 6 am CST Tuesday...

Winter Weather Advisory
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 3:38 PM CST on February 13, 2012

... Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 6 am CST
Tuesday...

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 6 am CST
Tuesday.

* An area of snow will continue to move eastward during the
evening hours. Total snowfall for this event will likely be in
the 1 to 2 inch range. Locally up 3 inches of snow may occur
north of the Ohio River.

The snow will taper off... and likely change over to freezing
drizzle over southeast Missouri... parts of southern Illinois and
western Kentucky late this evening. This freezing drizzle or
light freezing rain will eventually take the place of snow over
all areas by sunrise. Over western Kentucky south of the western
Kentucky Parkway... the snow will change to freezing drizzle and
then light rain or drizzle by morning.

* Travel conditions across the area will likely deteriorate from
west to east. Those planning to travel... especially this
evening into the overnight hours... should be prepared for
slippery conditions and reduced visibility... especially on
untreated and elevated roadways. Allow extra time to reach your
destination. The mixture of snow and freezing drizzle may make
travel difficult during the morning commute.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Winter Weather Advisory means that periods of snow... sleet... or
freezing rain will cause travel difficulties. Be prepared for
slippery roads and limited visibilities... and use caution while
driving.
