A strong ridge of high pressure will aid in providing some of the warmest temperatures of the Summer thus far along the West Coast, while dangerously high heat index values up to 110 degrees will be possible from southern Iowa through northern Louisiana. Residents are urged to take precaution while working outside.

Heat Advisory
Statement as of 11:04 AM CDT on July 28, 2015

... Heat advisory remains in effect until 8 PM CDT this evening...

* temperature... lower 90s are expected across most of central
and southeast Illinois this afternoon... lingering through
about 7 PM.

* Heat index... as dew points rise into the mid to upper 70s...
this will create dangerous heat index values of 105 to 110
degrees this afternoon... with the highest values from about
Springfield west.

* Impacts... heat related illness can develop quickly in such
conditions... especially for people doing strenuous activities
outdoors.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

To reduce risk during outdoor work... the occupational safety and
health administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks
in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by
heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke
is an emergency... call 9 1 1.

A heat advisory means that a period of hot temperatures is
expected. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity
will combine to create a situation in which heat illnesses are
possible. Drink plenty of water... stay in an air-conditioned
room... stay out of the sun... and check up on relatives and
neighbors.
