Showers and thunderstorms will move into the Plains, while also continuing across the East Coast on Friday. A low pressure system over the Rocky Mountains will persist on its eastward track and move into the Plains. Flow around this system will create northward flow, pulling abundant moisture and energy in from the Gulf of Mexico. This will allow for scattered showers and thunderstorms to develop across the Southern Plains again on Friday, spreading northward through the Central and Northern Plains. There is a slight chance that these storms will turn severe across northeastern Colorado, into western Kansas and Nebraska. Large hail and strong winds are likely in these areas, with possibly a tornado or two.

Meanwhile in the East, a trough of low pressure and associated cold front will slowly move eastward and offshore the East Coast on Friday. This system will allow for showers and thunderstorms to persist from the Mid-Atlantic states through Maine. Severe thunderstorms are not likely in these areas, but periods of heavy rainfall and strong winds will persist as this system lingers over the Northeast through Friday night.

Out West, an area of low pressure continues spinning over the Pacific Northwest, maintaining onshore flow. This will bring more rain showers to Oregon and Washington, with snow showers possible at highest elevations.

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 9 am MDT
Friday.

* Impacts/timing: snow... moderate at times... will continue through
tonight. Roads may become slushy causing difficult
travel... particularly over Lost Trail Pass and Gilmore Summit.
Slushy snow in Salmon could break tree branches with power
outages possible.

* Snow accumulations: new snow accumulations from tonight
through Friday morning of 1 to 3 inches can be expected... with
isolated amounts up to 6 inches over Lost Trail Pass.

* Locations impacted include... Bannock Pass... Highway 28 Tendoy
to Lone Pine... Highway 93 Lost Trail Pass to Gibbonsville...
Lemhi Pass... Salmon.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Winter Weather Advisory for snow means that periods of snow
will cause primarily travel difficulties. Be prepared for snow
covered roads and limited visibilities... and use caution while
driving.
