The National Weather Service in Omaha has issued a

* Flood Warning due to melting snow in...
eastern Washington County in east central Nebraska
southwestern Harrison County in southwest Iowa

* until 1030 am CDT Saturday

* at 1020 am CDT... Washington County emergency management officials
reported flooding across the warned area. Specific areas included
an area east of Fort Calhoun near County Road 47 which runs north
to the Missouri River. Several homes in the area are experiencing
rising water and flooding of low lying areas.

* An additional rise on the Missouri River of one foot can be
expected through late Saturday night... early Sunday morning when
the river is expected to start receding.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Flooding is occurring or is imminent. Most flood related deaths occur
in automobiles. Do not attempt to cross water covered bridges...
dips... or low water crossings. Never try to cross a flowing stream...
even a small one... on foot or in a vehicle.

To report flooding... have the nearest law enforcement agency relay
your report to the National Weather Service.

... 5th and final day of National flood awareness week for 2010...

Today's topic is flood safety and preparation. Floods happen and an
average of 100 deaths per year occurred between 1997 and 2006. Good
preparation and knowing what to do in a flood will heighten your
awareness toward safety and possibly your survival.

Some flood safety preparation tips to follow are:

- prepare a family disaster plan.
- Check to see if your insurance covers flood damage. If
    not... get flood insurance.
- Keep insurance... important documents and other valuable items in
    a safe deposit box.
- Assemble a disaster supplies kit.
- Make a keep-in touch arrangement with relatives and friends.

for ideas and examples of disaster plans and disaster kits.
