Weather Summary
Weather Underground midday recap for Monday, February 13, 2012. A storm raced out of the Rockies and into the Plains on Monday, producing a good shot of Winter weather in the Plains and Mississippi Valley. Winter Weather Advisories were posted from eastern Oklahoma through the western Tennessee Valley in anticipation of several inches of new snow. Snow fell as far north as Minnesota and Michigan, but lighter snow was reported the farther north you went. In the warmer air closer to the Gulf Coast, rain fell in Louisiana and Mississippi.

Wet weather also greeted the West Coast as a Pacific storm slammed into California. This storm lacked a tremendous amount of moisture, but it has been a very dry Winter for the state thus far, and any precipitation is very much welcomed. Up to a foot of new snow is possible from this storm in the higher elevations of the Sierra Nevadas when all is said and done.

The East Coast was dry as a high pressure continued to dominate, but the region experienced another chilly day. By the afternoon, temperatures were still in the 20s and 30s for many areas in New England, while temperatures in the 30s were experience as far south as Arkansas. Morning temperatures were in the 20s in northern Florida.

The Northern Plains rose into the 20s and 30s, while the Northwest saw temperatures in the 30s and 40s. The Southwest rose into the 40s, 50s, and some 60s.

Freezing Rain Advisory
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 8:19 PM CST on February 13, 2012

... Freezing Rain Advisory in effect until midnight CST tonight...

The National Weather Service in Des Moines has issued a Freezing
Rain Advisory... which is in effect until midnight CST tonight.

* Timing or short term trends... freezing drizzle and light
freezing rain is expected to continue over the region this
evening.

* Storm total ice accumulations... only a few hundredths of an inch
of ice is expected... but this will be enough to cause icy roads
and hazardous travel.

* Impacts... roads will become icy and very difficult to drive on
for the next several hours. Slow down and use extreme caution if
out traveling across the region this evening.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Freezing Rain Advisory means that periods of freezing rain or
freezing drizzle will cause travel difficulties. Be prepared for
slippery roads. Slow down and use caution while driving.

Special Weather Statement
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 5:58 PM CST on February 13, 2012

... Slick spots may develop later this evening...

Although much of the snow has ended across central and southern
Iowa... intermittent light drizzle and light freezing drizzle will
continue into the evening. There may be some flurries as well...
but little or no additional snow accumulations are anticipated.

Roads are wet with Road surface temperatures at or just below the
freezing from the Missouri border up to around Highway 20... and
those conditions are expected to persist into the evening commute.
Additionally... slick and icy spots may develop as Road temperatures
begin to gradually drop over the next several hours. Fog may also
develop later this evening with reduced visibility.

Motorists planning travel later tonight should be prepared for
changing Road conditions as the evening progresses.
