Winter Storm Warning | |

Statement as of 3:45 PM CST on December 24, 2009 ... Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 6 am CST Saturday... * short term trends... a frozen mix of precipitation continues west and is transitioning to all snow. East... rain continues. Precipitation intensity will increase through the evening with heavy snow developing during the evening and overnight hours west and central. * Long term trends... snowfall amounts of 4 to 9 inches will be possible during the overnight hours... possibly mixed with some sleet or freezing rain at times central with some rain expected east. Additional heavy snow will occur on Friday. * Storm total snow accumulations... twelve to eighteen inches of snow is expected by Saturday. Localized twenty inch amounts may occur across the northwest. * Winds and visibility... expect winds to become northwest at 25 to 35 mph with higher gusts tonight through Friday. The winds combined with the falling snow will result in near whiteout conditions at times west of a Carroll through Creston line. * Impacts... travel may become nearly impossible due to blowing and drifting snow later tonight into Friday... especially over the west sections of the warning area. Precautionary/preparedness actions... A Winter Storm Warning means significant amounts of snow and blowing snow are forecast that will make travel dangerous to nearly impossible at times. Only travel in an emergency. If you must travel... keep an extra flashlight... food... and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. Strong winds are also possible. |
