... Blizzard Warning remains in effect until 6 PM CST this evening... ... Winter Storm Warning has expired...
The Winter Storm Warning is no longer in effect. A Blizzard Warning remains in effect until 6 PM CST this evening.
An intense winter storm will affect the region overnight through Wednesday. This system produced a mixture of snow... sleet... and freezing rain during the evening... and has now changed to all snow. Snowfall amounts will range from just a few inches where more freezing rain and sleet falls... to nearly 10 inches where more snow falls. A few claps of thunder are possible overnight... which may produce very heavy snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches an hour.
As the system moves off to the northeast overnight... northwest winds will increase to 25 to 40 mph with gusts over 50 mph. Winds of this strength will create widespread blowing and drifting snow and reduced visibilities. Whiteout conditions are likely in rural and open areas. Travel will become difficult... if not impossible. The combination of strong winds... accumulating snow and blowing snow are likely to result in power outages. Falling tree limbs may also result in additional damage.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
A Winter Storm Warning means 6 to 8 inches or more of snow falling at intense rates of 1-2 inches per hour... combined with strong winds... sleet... and freezing rain is expected or occurring. This will make travel very dangerous or impossible... so only travel in an emergency and take your winter survival kit. If you must travel... keep an extra flashlight... food... and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.
