Weather Summary
Weather Underground midday recap for Monday, May 20, 2013.

Heavy rains and chances of severe thunderstorm activity continued for areas of the Plains into the Midwest on Tuesday as a broad, nearly stationary low remained over the Northern Plains. As the system lingered, ample moisture streamed northward from the Gulf of Mexico, while an associated cold front reached from the low southward through Central and Southern Plains. The sharpening cold front combined with a dry line in the Southern Plains and the moisture laden conditions of the Central U.S. set the stage for multiple clusters of thunderstorms to develop across the Plains and into the Mid-Mississippi Valley. Portions of eastern/central Oklahoma, north-central Texas, northwestern Arkansas, southern Missouri, far southeastern Kansas remained at moderate risk of severe thunderstorm activity as environmental conditions remained favorable for strong tornadoes, damaging wind gusts, and very large hail. Areas surrounding this moderate risk region from the parts of the central Texas into the Upper Great Lakes and Upper Mississippi Valley were at slight risk of severe thunderstorm development with hail and isolated tornadoes.

Meanwhile, areas of heavy rain and widely scattered showers persisted near the low and it\\\\'s associated warm front in portions of the north-central U.S. Continued precipitation in this already saturate region combined with rapid runoff maintained flood concerns from parts of North Dakota into northwestern Wisconsin.

Elsewhere, scattered showers and thunderstorms developed in the Mid-Atlantic and southeastern corner of the nation as a weak upper trough of low pressure dropped southward over the region. To the north, additional showers were possible in the Northeast.

... Final damage survey results for Dallas... Polk and story counties...

... Three short lived tornadoes embedded within a larger area of
straight line winds occurred from Dallas into far southern story
counties...

The following is a final assessment for the damage that occurred over
Dallas County on may 19 2013.

Tornado one

* estimated start time: 632 PM CDT

* event type: EF0 tornado

* event location: 3 miles southwest of Adel to 1.5 miles southwest
of Adel

* peak wind: 75 mph

* average path width: broad circulation in open fields

* path length: 1.5 miles

* injuries or fatalities: 0

* discussion/damage: although credible spotter reports... Doppler
radar data... photographic evidence and survey results were all
inconclusive by themselves... the overall evidence and number of
reports indicated that a short lived broad weak tornado occurred
in open fields southwest of Adel. The tornado was embedded
within a larger area of 60 to 75 mph straight line winds.

Tornado two

* estimated start time: 645 PM CDT

* event type: EF1 tornado

* event location: 3 miles east southeast of Dallas Center to 4
miles east of Dallas Center

* peak wind: 100 mph

* average path width: 200 yards

* path length: 1.4 miles

* injuries or fatalities: 0

* discussion/damage: the broad circulation embedded within The
Straight line winds mentioned above appeared to
redevelop... strengthen and contract as it moved southeast of
Dallas Center. A narrow band of stronger winds produced a tight
gradient of more intense and significant tree and some
structural wind damage at one residence along 250th St. The
Straight line wind also appeared to diminish as the storm
approached Grimes.

The following is a final assessment for the damage that occurred
over far northern Polk and far southern Story County on may 19
2013.

Tornado three

* estimated start time: 705 PM CDT

* event type: EF1 tornado

* event location: 2.5 miles south southeast of Slater to 2 miles
south southeast of Huxley

* peak wind: 90 mph

* average path width: 250 yards

* path length: intermittent 5 mile track

* injuries or fatalities: 0

* discussion/damage: Doppler radar data showed a very compact
circulation that developed over far northern Polk County and
dissipated rapidly shortly after it crossed the Polk Story
County line. Damage along its track was corroborated by several
eyewitness reports and dash cam video from local law
enforcement. Peak damage included garage and living room roof
removed from a manufactured home.
