Statement as of 7:49 PM HST on November 12, 2009 ... A Flash Flood Warning remains in effect for the island of Maui in Maui County until 915 PM HST... Thunderstorms with moderate to heavy rain continue to affect windward Maui... especially along the north slopes of Haleakala... from Paia to Keanae to Hana. Rainfall has recently eased along the south facing slopes... and is also expected to gradually ease over the north facing slopes over the next hour. Precautionary/preparedness actions... A Flash Flood Warning means flash flooding is imminent or occurring in streams... roads and low lying areas. Move to higher ground now. Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle or on foot. Turn around... Don/T drown. Runoff from this storm may also cause rock and mudslides in steep terrain. The Flash Flood Watch is now in effect for * all Hawaiian islands. * Through Friday afternoon. * Low pressure west of the state will continue moving slowly west- southwest. The atmosphere over Hawaii will remain unstable enough for the possibility of heavy showers and thunderstorms overnight and Friday. Precautionary/preparedness actions... A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding. Prepare now for the possibility of very heavy rainfall that could cause flash flooding. Campers and hikers should pay particular attention to later forecasts. Stay away from creeks... streams... and other flood prone areas. Remember that it does not have to be raining where you are for flash flooding to occur.
