Weather Summary
Weather Underground Forecast for Saturday, February 11, 2012.

Precipitation will spread across the East Coast on Saturday, while more rain and mountain snow showers are anticipated for parts of the West. A trough of low pressure and associated cold front continue moving eastward across the Eastern Valleys into the Eastern Seaboard. Cool temperatures to the north will allow for snow showers to develop across the Northeast and New England, while rain showers are likely over the Mid-Atlantic states. Rain showers over the Southeastern states should wind down in the early morning hours as the tail end of the system pushes offshore early in the day. Expect the New York metropolitan area to see 1 to 3 inches of snow, while the Washington D.C. area will see a messy combination of snow and freezing rain as high temperatures reach into the lower 40s.

Behind this system, a ridge of high pressure continues to build in from the Plains, pushing cold and dry air in from Canada. This allows for plenty of sunshine to spread from the Plains over the Mississippi River Valley and into the Eastern Valleys. Expect the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest to see highs in the teens again, while the Midwest will see highs in the 20s. Strong winds will accompany this system, pushing windchill values below zero in these areas. The Southern Plains will remain in the 40s on Saturday.

Out West, a trough of low pressure pushes a cold front over the Pacific Northwest and continues pulling moisture onshore with it. This will kick up more rain showers with high elevation snow showers likely in the Cascades. The tail end of the frontal boundary will sweep through California, bringing light rain showers to the coasts and interior valleys. Expect light snow showers in the Sierra Nevadas by Saturday evening.

Wind Chill Advisory
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 1:16 AM CST on February 11, 2012

... Wind Chill Advisory in effect from 1 am EST /midnight CST/ to
10 am EST /9 am CST/ Sunday...

The National Weather Service in Tallahassee has issued a Wind
Chill Advisory... which is in effect from 1 am EST /midnight CST/
to 10 am EST /9 am CST/ Sunday.

* Wind chill values... by daybreak Sunday... minimum wind chill
readings will be 12 to 15 degrees across southeast Alabama
rising modestly to the southeast to 17 to 20 degrees across much
of northwest Florida.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Wind Chill Advisory means that very cold air and strong winds
will combine to generate low wind chills. This could lead to
hypothermia if precautions are not taken. If you venture
outdoors... consider wearing a hat and gloves.

Hard Freeze Warning, Wind Advisory, Hard Freeze Watch
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 1:17 AM CST on February 11, 2012

... Wind Advisory in effect from 11 am EST /10 am CST/ this
morning to 11 PM EST /10 PM CST/ this evening...
... Hard freeze warning in effect from midnight EST /11 PM CST/
tonight to 9 am EST /8 am CST/ Sunday...
... Hard freeze watch in effect from Sunday evening through Monday
morning...

The National Weather Service in Tallahassee has issued a hard
freeze warning... which is in effect from midnight EST /11 PM CST/
tonight to 9 am EST /8 am CST/ Sunday. A Wind Advisory has also
been issued. This Wind Advisory is in effect from 11 am EST
/10 am CST/ this morning to 11 PM EST /10 PM CST/ this evening.
In addition... a hard freeze watch has been issued. This hard
freeze watch is in effect from Sunday evening through Monday
morning.

* Timing... gusty winds will increase during the late morning hours
and remain elevated through the evening.

* Winds... sustained 20 to 25 mph with gusts to 30 to 35 mph during
the afternoon and evening subsiding to 10 mph or less after
midnight.

* Temperature... minimum temperatures will be in the lower to mid
20s by daybreak Sunday away from the immediate coast with total
freeze durations of up to 11 hours in southeast Alabama and
southwest Georgia and 8 to 9 hours in Florida. Another hard
freeze is expected Sunday night into Monday morning.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A hard freeze warning means sub-freezing temperatures below 26
degrees are imminent or highly likely and are expected to last for
at least 2 hours. These conditions will kill crops and other
sensitive vegetation.

A Wind Advisory means that sustained winds or frequent gusts of 26
to 39 mph are expected. Winds this strong can make driving
difficult... especially for high profile vehicles. Use extra
caution. Conditions will also be hazardous on area lakes.

Fire Weather Watch
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 3:17 AM CST on February 11, 2012

... Fire Weather Watch remains in effect from Sunday morning
through Sunday evening for...

* wind... northwest around 10 mph.

* Humidity... minimum values 15 to 20 percent.

* Impacts... any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly.
Outdoor burning is not recommended.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Fire Weather Watch means that critical fire weather conditions
are possible. Listen for later forecasts and possible red flag
warnings.
