Weather Summary
Weather Underground Forecast for Saturday, February 11, 2012.

Precipitation will spread across the East Coast on Saturday, while more rain and mountain snow showers are anticipated for parts of the West. A trough of low pressure and associated cold front continue moving eastward across the Eastern Valleys into the Eastern Seaboard. Cool temperatures to the north will allow for snow showers to develop across the Northeast and New England, while rain showers are likely over the Mid-Atlantic states. Rain showers over the Southeastern states should wind down in the early morning hours as the tail end of the system pushes offshore early in the day. Expect the New York metropolitan area to see 1 to 3 inches of snow, while the Washington D.C. area will see a messy combination of snow and freezing rain as high temperatures reach into the lower 40s.

Behind this system, a ridge of high pressure continues to build in from the Plains, pushing cold and dry air in from Canada. This allows for plenty of sunshine to spread from the Plains over the Mississippi River Valley and into the Eastern Valleys. Expect the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest to see highs in the teens again, while the Midwest will see highs in the 20s. Strong winds will accompany this system, pushing windchill values below zero in these areas. The Southern Plains will remain in the 40s on Saturday.

Out West, a trough of low pressure pushes a cold front over the Pacific Northwest and continues pulling moisture onshore with it. This will kick up more rain showers with high elevation snow showers likely in the Cascades. The tail end of the frontal boundary will sweep through California, bringing light rain showers to the coasts and interior valleys. Expect light snow showers in the Sierra Nevadas by Saturday evening.

Fire Weather Warning
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 2:04 AM EST on February 11, 2012

... Red flag warning in effect from noon today to 8 PM EST this
evening for low humidity... gusty winds and dry fuels across
southeast South Carolina and southeast Georgia...

The National Weather Service in Charleston has issued a red flag
warning for low humidity... gusty winds and dry fuels... which is in
effect from noon today to 8 PM EST this evening. The Fire Weather
Watch is no longer in effect.

* Winds: northwest 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph.

* Relative humidity: 22 to 25 percent.

* Impacts: the combination of gusty winds... dry fuels... low
humidity and ongoing severe to exceptional drought conditions
will result in a very high fire danger. The danger is such that
any fires that develop could quickly become out of control
wildfires.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions
are expected. Please advise the appropriate officials and fire
crews in the field of this red flag warning.

Public Information Statement
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 4:38 am EST on February 11, 2012

... Cold weather preparedness and safety information...

The key to any preparedness and safety actions is to act well
before any problems occur.

Try to stay inside as much as possible. If you must be outside...
dress appropriately for the cold weather. Dress in layered
clothing... with a hat... scarf... and mittens or gloves.

Protecting pipes from freezing...

Remove and drain outdoor hoses and store indoors. If possible...
close any valves that supply outdoor hose bibs... then open and
drain remaining water from outdoor values. Check any other areas
where pipes could be exposed to the cold... and cover or insulate
those pipes if possible. Let at least one faucet drip inside your
home tonight... which will help prevent ice from building up in
the pipes. Open up the Cabinet doors underneath all sinks to
allow for warmer air to circulate inside.

Other areas around the home...

Keep garage doors closed... especially if there are water supply
lines located in the garage. Keep your thermostat set at the same
temperature during the day and the night... helping to maintain
sufficiently warm temperatures inside the home... and lowering the
threat for pipes to freeze. If you are going away... keep your
thermostat set no lower than 55 degrees.

Plants and pets...

If there are any plants outside that will be susceptible to the
cold weather... we suggest covering them or if possible bringing
them inside.

Do not Forget about your pets. If you can... bring them inside at
night. If this is not possible... make sure they will have plenty
of warmth such as blankets or other coverings to remain warm.
Ensure that they have plenty of unfrozen drinking water.

Those susceptible to the cold...

Check on the elderly and others such as Young children and those
with illnesses that may be more susceptible to very cold
temperatures. Make sure they have adequate heating and shelter.

Portable heating devices...

If using heating devices such as an electric space heater... make
sure it is is good working order... is never left unattended... and
is not located near any flammable materials. Avoid using any
heating devices that use an open flame or combustible materials.

For additional cold weather safety and preparedness information...
please visit the National Weather Service in Charleston at...
