Weather Summary
Weather Underground Forecast for Saturday, February 11, 2012.

Precipitation will spread across the East Coast on Saturday, while more rain and mountain snow showers are anticipated for parts of the West. A trough of low pressure and associated cold front continue moving eastward across the Eastern Valleys into the Eastern Seaboard. Cool temperatures to the north will allow for snow showers to develop across the Northeast and New England, while rain showers are likely over the Mid-Atlantic states. Rain showers over the Southeastern states should wind down in the early morning hours as the tail end of the system pushes offshore early in the day. Expect the New York metropolitan area to see 1 to 3 inches of snow, while the Washington D.C. area will see a messy combination of snow and freezing rain as high temperatures reach into the lower 40s.

Behind this system, a ridge of high pressure continues to build in from the Plains, pushing cold and dry air in from Canada. This allows for plenty of sunshine to spread from the Plains over the Mississippi River Valley and into the Eastern Valleys. Expect the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest to see highs in the teens again, while the Midwest will see highs in the 20s. Strong winds will accompany this system, pushing windchill values below zero in these areas. The Southern Plains will remain in the 40s on Saturday.

Out West, a trough of low pressure pushes a cold front over the Pacific Northwest and continues pulling moisture onshore with it. This will kick up more rain showers with high elevation snow showers likely in the Cascades. The tail end of the frontal boundary will sweep through California, bringing light rain showers to the coasts and interior valleys. Expect light snow showers in the Sierra Nevadas by Saturday evening.

Hard Freeze Warning, Lake Wind Advisory
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 11:08 AM EST on February 11, 2012

... Lake Wind Advisory remains in effect until 7 PM EST this
evening...
... Hard freeze warning remains in effect from midnight tonight to
9 am EST Sunday...

* timing... gusty northwest winds into early this evening. Sub
freezing temperatures overnight through early Sunday morning.

* Winds... northwest winds 15 to 20 mph will prevail through this
afternoon... with gusts to 35 mph.

* Temperature... low temperatures will be in the mid 20s tonight.
Northwest winds will also produce lower wind chill readings
tonight as well.

* Impacts... boaters should exercise caution today... as should
drivers of high profile vehicles. Freezing temperatures will
kill sensitive vegetation that is not protected tonight.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A hard freeze warning means that temperatures less than
27 degrees are expected for at least 2 hours.

A lake Wind Advisory is issued when sustained winds of 20 to
25 mph or gusts of 30 to 39 mph are expected. Small boats will be
especially prone to capsizing. Boaters in the advisory area
should avoid open water and stay close to shore in wind protected
inlets. High profile vehicles should use extra caution when
traveling as well.

Fire Weather Warning
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 11:05 AM EST on February 11, 2012

... Red flag warning remains in effect until 5 PM EST this
afternoon for gusty winds and low humidity for northeast Florida
and interior southeast Georgia...

* affected area... in Florida... fire weather zones 020... 021...
022... 023... 024... 025... 030... 031... 032... 033... 035... 036...
037... 038 and 040. In Georgia... fire weather zones 132...
133... 134... 135... 136... 149... 150... 151... 162 and 163.

* Wind... northwest winds 20 mph with gusts to 30 mph.

* Humidity... minimum relative humidities will be 25 to 30
percent over interior southeast Georgia... and 30 to 35 percent
over northeast Florida.

* Impacts... any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly.
Outdoor burning is not recommended.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions
are either occurring now... or will shortly. A combination of
strong winds and low relative humidity will create explosive fire
growth potential.
