Areal Flood Watch
Statement as of 4:35 AM EST on December 17, 2009
... Flood Watch in effect from late tonight through Friday
evening for parts of central Georgia...
The National Weather Service in Peachtree City has issued a
* Flood Watch for portions of central Georgia generally along and
south of a line from Muscogee to Warren counties.
* From late tonight through Friday evening.
* Surface low pressure will develop over the Gulf of Mexico and
move across south Georgia or North Florida on Friday and into
the Atlantic Friday night.
* Rainfall amounts around 2 inches can be expected across the
watch area with locally higher amounts.
Recent heavy rain events have caused the soils to become wet or
saturated with well above average stream flow levels in this area.
Several large creeks and rivers are still in minor flood. The
additional rainfall will quickly turn into runoff and cause rises
on streams... creeks and rivers. Therefore... the expected rainfall
could result in additional widespread minor to isolated moderate
flooding across the area of concern. Also..ponding of water on
roads will be possible in low lying or slow draining areas due to
debris in ditches and drains.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on
current forecasts.
You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible
flood warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be
prepared to take action should flooding develop.
