Tropical Weather: Subtropical Storm Beryl (North Atlantic) Tropical Storm Sanvu (Western Pacific)
Weather Summary
Weather Underground midday recap for Saturday, May 26, 2012. A busy day greeted parts of the country at the start of the Memorial Day weekend. First, Subtropical Storm Beryl formed off the Carolina Coast and was expected to move slowly west-southwestward toward the northeast coast of Florida. Beryl is anticipated to make landfall late Sunday evening or early Monday with tropical storm strength winds before lingering over the area through Tuesday. Northern Florida and adjacent areas of Georgia are currently suffering through an exceptional drought, so the significant rain from Beryl will help to alleviate some of the drought.

Meanwhile, an intense heat wave gripped the Southern Plains and Southeast on Saturday. This heat wave produced temperatures well into the 90s for a wide swath the country from eastern New Mexico through Georgia. Temperatures in the 90s were also observed well north into the Central Plains and Ohio Valley. Heat index values, which tell how warm the air feels, rose above 100 degrees along the Gulf Coast where the humidity was elevated. This heat wave was expected to continue and expand Sunday, with more areas warming above 100 degrees.

While no severe weather has formed by the early afternoon, there remains a slight risk of severe weather in the Plains into the evening. This severe weather can include strong thunderstorms, large hail, strong winds, and even tornadoes. Residents in the Plains should monitor local weather conditions.

The Southern Plains and Southeast rose into the 90s and 100s, while the Northeast saw temperatures in the 70s and 80s. The Southwest rose into the 80s and 90s, while the Northwest saw temperatures in the 70s.

morning...

The National Weather Service in Jacksonville has issued a

* Flood Watch for portions of northeast Florida and southeast
Georgia.

* From Sunday afternoon through Tuesday morning

* subtropical storm Beryl will begin to impact the area Sunday
afternoon and then push ashore Sunday night and affect the
region through Tuesday.

* Total rainfall amounts will be near 3 to 6 inches... with locally
higher amounts in a few locations possible. The threat of heavy
rainfall will increase Sunday night through Tuesday morning as
Beryl slows it movement.

A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on
current forecasts.

You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible
flood warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be
prepared to take action should flooding develop.

Tropical Storm Warning
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 11:38 PM EDT on May 26, 2012

... Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect...

... Precautionary/preparedness actions...
precautionary/preparedness actions...

Final preparations to protect life and property should be
completed before conditions deteriorate. The onset of gusty winds
and heavy rains can cause outside activities to become dangerous.
Secure loose outdoor objects which can be blown around. If you
live in a Mobile home... leave it for more substantial shelter.

... Probability of tropical storm/hurricane conditions...
the chance for hurricane conditions at this time is very small.
Also... the chance for tropical storm conditions at this time is
up to 62 percent. This represents a general upward trend since
the last forecast.

... Winds...
maximum winds are forecast to be in the 25 to 40 mph range with
locally higher gusts. Minor damage may occur to older Mobile
homes. The strongest winds are expected to be near and east of
U.S. Highway 301. Residents should move loose items
indoors... such as garbage cans and outdoor furniture... as they
will be blown around. Isolated power outages will be possible.

... Inland flooding...
there is a potential for locally heavy rainfall on the order of
3 to 5 inches... possibly higher in isolated locations. Rainbands
will begin to move inland during the day Sunday. Periods of heavy
rainfall are expected to continue through Tuesday due to the
storm slowing down once it makes landfall and stalling over the
area. A Flood Watch has been issued for areas along and north of
State Road 16 in northeast Florida as well as all of southeast
Georgia.

A Flood Watch is in effect for portions of the area. See latest
forecast for latest information.

... Tornadoes...
there will be a low chance of tornadoes Sunday afternoon through
Sunday night as rainbands move inland.
