... Flood Watch in effect from 1 am EST Wednesday through
Wednesday evening...
The National Weather Service in Peachtree City has issued a
* Flood Watch for portions north Georgia and most of central
Georgia.
* From 1 am EST Wednesday through Wednesday evening
* a low pressure system in the west Gulf of Mexico continued to
organize and strengthen this afternoon. The storm will move to
South Alabama by early Wednesday morning. The storm will deepen
as it moves northeast to the central Appalachians by Wednesday
night. This scenario will allow abundant Gulf moisture to
increase over Georgia late tonight with a warm front pushing
north through the state on Wednesday.
Periods of heavy rain are likely along and ahead of the warm
front. Widespread rainfall amounts of 2 to 3 inches will be
likely... beginning late tonight in west central Georgia... then
spreading into central and north Georgia Wednesday. Isolated
higher amounts of 4 inches or more are possible... but mainly in
west central and central Georgia. The area of greatest rainfall
potential will be generally from Carrollton to Cleveland to
Louisville to Abbeville. This will include the major Metro
cities of Atlanta... Athens... Macon and Columbus. Elsewhere...
rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches can be expected.
While there has not been any significant rain over north and
central Georgia for over a week... soil moisture and average
stream flows remain above normal. The projected rainfall amounts
may result in widespread minor to isolated moderate flooding of
creeks and rivers in the watch area. However... this storm system
is expected to move quickly enough to prevent a prolonged period
of heavy rain. Consequently... no major flooding is expected at
this time.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on
current forecasts.
You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible
flood warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be
prepared to take action should flooding develop.
