A lingering long period northeast swell will producea high risk for rip currents at east central floirda beaches today. Remember to swim near a life guard and do not swim alone. Ask the beach patrol about ocean hazards when you arrive at the beach. Breezy onshore winds are also expected as the gradient tightens between an area of high pressure offshore from the Carolinas and a low pressure trough developing across the Bahamas. Isolated showers will move onshore from the Atlantic through mid day across the coastal counties. Thunderstorms are not expected today. Coastal Hazard Statement
Statement as of 4:06 AM EDT on May 04, 2015

... High rip current risk in effect from 8 am EDT this morning
through this evening...

The National Weather Service in Melbourne has issued a high rip
current risk... which is in effect from 8 am EDT this morning
through this evening.

* Timing... though rip currents could occur anytime... the greatest
seaward pull is expected to be from late morning through late
afternoon due to tidal effects.

* Impacts... life threatening rip currents are likely with rough
surf at area beaches today.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

There is a high risk of rip currents.

Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away
from shore... which occur most often at low spots or breaks in The
Sandbar and in the vicinity of structures such as groins...
jetties and piers. Heed the advice of lifeguards... beach patrol
flags and signs.

If you become caught in a rip current... Yell for help. Remain
calm... do not exhaust yourself and stay afloat while waiting for
help. If you have to swim out of a rip current... swim parallel to
shore and back toward the beach when possible. Do not attempt to
swim directly against a rip current as you will tire quickly.
