Active Advisory: Tropical Storm Warning (US Severe Weather) Active Notice: Record Report
Tropical Weather: Subtropical Storm Beryl (North Atlantic) Post-Tropical Cyclone Bud (East Pacific) Tropical Storm Sanvu (Western Pacific)
Weather Summary
Weather Underground midday recap for Saturday, May 26, 2012. A busy day greeted parts of the country at the start of the Memorial Day weekend. First, Subtropical Storm Beryl formed off the Carolina Coast and was expected to move slowly west-southwestward toward the northeast coast of Florida. Beryl is anticipated to make landfall late Sunday evening or early Monday with tropical storm strength winds before lingering over the area through Tuesday. Northern Florida and adjacent areas of Georgia are currently suffering through an exceptional drought, so the significant rain from Beryl will help to alleviate some of the drought.

Meanwhile, an intense heat wave gripped the Southern Plains and Southeast on Saturday. This heat wave produced temperatures well into the 90s for a wide swath the country from eastern New Mexico through Georgia. Temperatures in the 90s were also observed well north into the Central Plains and Ohio Valley. Heat index values, which tell how warm the air feels, rose above 100 degrees along the Gulf Coast where the humidity was elevated. This heat wave was expected to continue and expand Sunday, with more areas warming above 100 degrees.

While no severe weather has formed by the early afternoon, there remains a slight risk of severe weather in the Plains into the evening. This severe weather can include strong thunderstorms, large hail, strong winds, and even tornadoes. Residents in the Plains should monitor local weather conditions.

The Southern Plains and Southeast rose into the 90s and 100s, while the Northeast saw temperatures in the 70s and 80s. The Southwest rose into the 80s and 90s, while the Northwest saw temperatures in the 70s.

Nowcast as of 9:53 PM EDT on May 26, 2012
Most of the attention will be focused on the coastal waters and the land area north of Cape Canaveral as sub tropical storm...currently located about 290 miles east of Jacksonville...tracks southwest at around 6 mph. Refer to the latest advisory on Beryl for more complete information. The winds on the coastal waters from the Volusia Brevard County line north will increase to 15 to 20 knots late overnight and continue to increase Sunday as Beryl moves closer to northeast Florida. The seas will build to 9 feet over the offshore waters. A building northeast swell component to the seas will strengthen rip currents and begin to produce rough surf starting late overnight through Sunday. Scattered showers associated with the outermost rain bands of Beryl have been brushing the eastern edges of the coastal water forecast area and will begin to impact the coastal waters north of Cape Canaveral late overnight. precautionary/preparedness actions...

Outside preparations should be completed tonight... before the
onset of gusty winds and squalls on Sunday... which may cause
outside activities to become dangerous. Secure any loose outdoor
objects that can be blown around... or bring smaller items indoors
if possible.

... Winds...
the latest forecast still calls for maximum winds of 20 to 30 mph
with gusts to around 40 mph late Sunday into Sunday night. However
as subtropical storm Beryl approaches... stronger winds are
possible in squalls. Continue to closely monitor the forecast
for any significant changes and be ready to act. These wind gusts
may cause minor damage to tree branches and toss around loose
outdoor items.
