... Flood Watch in effect through Tuesday evening...

The National Weather Service in Tallahassee has issued a

* Flood Watch for portions of southeast Alabama... Florida and
Georgia... including the following areas... in southeast
Alabama... Coffee... Dale... Geneva... Henry and Houston. In
Florida... Bay... Calhoun... coastal Walton... Franklin...
Gadsden... Gulf... Holmes... inland Walton... Jackson...
Jefferson... Leon... Liberty... Wakulla and Washington. In
Georgia... Baker... Decatur... early... Grady... Miller...
Mitchell... Seminole and Thomas.

* Through Tuesday evening

* Tropical Storm Ida is forecast to move ashore the northern Gulf
Coast late tonight or early Tuesday morning. Even though Ida is
expected to gradually weaken and begin transitioning into a non-
tropical low pressure system tonight or Tuesday... there will
still be bands of heavy rain that affect portions of the Gulf
Coast states. Storm total rainfall amounts will generally be in
the 2 to 4 inch range from this evening through Tuesday evening.
These amounts would not exceed local flash flood guidance (for a
3-hour period). However... there could be locally higher amounts
of 4 to 6 inches in areas affected by heavier rain bands.

* The main impact will be to poor drainage areas in cities... low-
lying rural and suburban areas... and along creeks and streams. Heavy
rainfall is more likely to cause rapid rises in water at such
locations.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on
current forecasts.

You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible flood
warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be
prepared to take action should flooding develop. Flooded roads can
be especially dangerous to motorists... as it can be difficult to
see how deep standing water is on roadways. This danger is
enhanced at nighttime.

The most significant threat from Ida will likely be along the
coast in the form of above normal tides... high surf... and
tropical storm force wind gusts. Coastal residents should plan on
storm tides of 3 to 5 feet... and take the appropriate precautions
to protect life and property. These actions should be taken as
soon as possible... as higher winds and rain from Ida will move in
tonight and make outdoor chores difficult. Inland residents
should... as a precaution... secure loose objects such as garbage
cans... patio furniture... and dead tree limbs before the stronger
winds and heavy rain arrive tonight.


... Probability of tropical storm/hurricane conditions...
the chance for tropical storm conditions at this time is up to 60
percent... mainly in wind gusts.

... Winds...
the best chance for tropical storm force winds will be tonight
and Tuesday... mainly in gusts. Widespread or major damage is
unlikely... but some trees and power lines could be knocked down
in the stronger squalls. This could lead to sporadic power
outages.

... Storm surge and storm tide...
a storm surge of 2 feet is possible along the Panhandle coast tonight
and Tuesday. This surge will add to the normal tide levels... creating
above normal tides. The main threat will come during high tide.
The following is the next time of high tide at Panama City...

259 PM CST Tuesday.

At this time low lying areas along the coast will be most
vulnerable... as storm tides may reach 3 to 5 feet.
Remember... storm tide is the storm surge plus the actual tide. In
this case... high tide will be about 1.5 feet and the storm surge
will be around 2 to 3 feet.

In addition to above normal tides... high surf... and strong rip
currents are expected. The surf at Panama City was already up to
4 to 6 feet... and may reach 7 to 10 feet Tuesday morning... especially
in Western Bay and Walton counties. This could cause significant
beach erosion and possibly flooding of low lying areas and roads.

... Inland flooding...
a Flood Watch is in effect through Tuesday evening. Storm total
rainfall of 3 to 5 inches is expected along the path of Ida with
locally heavier amounts possible. This could cause minor flooding
in urban areas.
