... Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect...
... New information...
area tide gages shows a rapid rate of increase in high water values
as Ida moves closer to the coast... surface winds turn southeast and
the time of astronomical high tide approaches. Tide gages range from
2.5 to 3.8 feet. Coastal flooding is definitely occurring. Since Ida
has slowed... surge-related effects will be longer lasting...
especially west of Fort Morgan in locales such as the upper reaches
of Mobile Bay... dog river... the west end of Dauphin Island and Bayou
La Batre in particular. Currently Bayou La Batre exhibits the highest
water levels near 4 feet.
... Winds...
tropical storm force wind gusts will continue across extreme
southwest Alabama and the northwest Florida Panhandle through
morning. The sustained winds and wind gusts will subside below
tropical storm force over extreme southwest Alabama and the Florida
Panhandle later today. Gusts of 50 to 60 mph will be possible along
the coast with gusts to 40 to 50 mph further inland until the winds
subside on Tuesday. Power outages are a real possibility with Ida
tonight... especially near the coast.
... Storm surge and storm tide...
total tide heights of 3 to 5 feet are possible across southern Mobile
and Baldwin counties Alabama. Across the northwest Florida
Panhandle... total tide heights of 2 to 4 feet are anticipated. At
this time... it appears that the highest tide heights will be west of
Fort Morgan Alabama and in the 3 to 5 foot range. The time of
astronomical high tide on Tuesday will range from 2 to 5 am across
the region. This will exacerbate storm related flooding due to
tropical storm force winds from Ida during this time.
... Inland flooding...
a Flash Flood Watch is in effect for southwest Alabama and the
northwest Florida Panhandle through noon Tuesday. Rainfall totals of
3 to 6 inches... with locally higher amounts around 8 inches... can be
expected. Listen for possible flood warnings for your location... and
be ready to act should flooding occur.
... Coastal hazards...
moderate beach erosion is expected to occur from the west end of
Dauphin Island Alabama to Destin Florida. Extremely dangerous rip
currents will occur along the Alabama and northwest Florida beaches
through Tuesday afternoon due to high winds and waves. Rip currents
are life-threatening to anyone entering the surf... and swimmers
should not enter the water under any circumstances.
