Coastal Flood Statement | |

Statement as of 10:15 AM EST on November 09, 2009 Sustained east winds of 25 to 30 mph with gusts up to 40 mph are possible along the East Coast beaches of South Florida today. This will lead to strong and dangerous rip currents along the beaches of maimi-Dade... Broward... and Palm Beach counties today. People are not advised to go swimming in the Atlantic waters today. Moderate beach erosion has also been reported along the East Coast beaches of South Florida this morning from the beach patrol lifeguards. The moderate beach erosion will continue through today due to the strong easterly winds. The beach patrol lifeguards at Palm Beach County have also reported 8 foot breakers this morning along their beaches. These breakers should continue through the afternoon hours along the beaches of Palm Beach County. Precautionary/preparedness actions... A rip current is a 10 to 30 yard wide channel of water that can pull even a strong swimmer from near or inside The Sand Bar into deeper water. Due to the life threatening dangers that these strong currents of water pose... swimming is not advised. Swimming is not advised today. However... if you do go into the water swim at guarded beaches and heed the advice of the beach patrol. If caught in the seaward pull of a rip current do not attempt to move directly toward shore. Instead... move sideways across the rip current until the pull eases. An alternate method of escape is to let the rip current pull you seaward 50 to 100 yards... where the force weakens... and then swim toward the beach at an angle away from the current. Baxter |

Statement as of 3:44 AM EST on November 09, 2009 ... Wind Advisory now in effect until 3 PM EST this afternoon... The Wind Advisory is now in effect until 3 PM EST this afternoon. Sustained east winds of 25 to 30 mph with frequent gusts of 35 to 40 mph are expected across the area today. Precautionary/preparedness actions... A Wind Advisory means that sustained winds of 30 mph or higher or frequent gusts of 35 mph or higher are expected. Winds this strong can make driving difficult... especially for high profile vehicles. Use extra caution. Make sure to secure loose objects as they can be blown around by winds this strong. |
