... High surf advisory in effect from 10 am this morning to 10 PM EST Saturday...
The National Weather Service in Ruskin has issued a high surf advisory... which is in effect from 10 am this morning to 10 PM EST Saturday.
An increasing southerly wind flow ahead of the intensifying low pressure area over the west central Gulf will help to build seas over the adjacent Gulf waters today. The strong winds and building seas may produce some minor coastal flooding at times of high tide this afternoon and evening... with large breaking wave action possibly producing additional overwash problems in some locations... especially south facing shores. The building surf will also increase the risk for rip currents so residents and visitors should remain out of the surf.
At the current time tides are expected to run 2 to 3 feet above normal at times of high tide this afternoon and evening along the Gulf Coast... and 1 to 2 feet in Tampa Bay. Coastal residents should review evacuation plans... and be ready to move at a moment's notice... should action be required.
In addition the increasing winds and seas will make for very hazardous boating conditions... and mariners... fishermen... and boating enthusiasts may want to postpone trips into the Gulf until conditions improve late in the weekend.
Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio or your local media for further updates on this developing weather situation.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
A high surf advisory is issued when dangerous water action is expected along the coast. This includes rough surf... large breaking waves... rip currents... and strong undertow.
Beach goers are urged to heed lifeguard warnings.
Lake Wind Advisory
Statement as of 3:42 AM EST on December 18, 2009
... Lake Wind Advisory remains in effect from 9 am this morning to 6 PM EST this evening...
An intensifying low pressure area over the central Gulf of Mexico early this morning will move across the Gulf and then northern Florida during today. An increasing south to southwest wind flow ahead of this low will result speeds into the 20 to 30 mile per hour range today with a few higher gusts possible. These strong and gusty winds will create hazardous boating conditions on all area lakes.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
A lake Wind Advisory is issued when sustained winds are forecast to be 20 to 29 mph with frequent gusts to near or above gale force for at least 3 hours. Winds of these magnitudes will create rough conditions on larger area lakes which could produce damage to... or flip... small pleasure craft.
Outdoor boating enthusiasts may wish to postpone lake related activities until conditions improve later on Saturday.
Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio or your local media for further updates.
