Nowcast | as of 12:57 PM EDT on September 17, 2014

Considerable high cloudiness from convection over the Gulf of Mexico and western Florida continues to overspread the area and limit heating. This is keeping temperatures to the low and mid 80s early this afternoon. Nonetheless...where peeks of sunshine can poke through...expect scattered showers to form in the very moist airmass and eventually develop into thunderstorms. Motion will be toward the east to southeast at 10 to 15 mph. A pre frontal trough or wind shift should push south into lake and Volusia counties this afternoon and shift winds out of the north...and northeast along the Volusia coast to produce a pseudo sea breeze. These boundaries should provide a focus for showers and storms across the north and interior. Also... scattered storms pushing east from the Gulf Coast toward Lake Okeechobee may affect southern sections from Okeechobee to the Treasure Coast later this afternoon. NOAA buoys 9 and 10 report that long period swells from Hurricane Edouard continue to propagate into the coastal waters and impact the surf zone. There is considerable energy with these swells with periods of 15 seconds but heights are not as high as expected...only 2 to 3 feet. This still produces a high risk of rip currents at the beaches but perhaps a disappointment for surfers...despite the offshore wind.
