Nowcast | as of 6:10 PM EDT on May 24, 2015

Onshore flow...breezy at times...will continue into this evening with onshore moving showers. Shower coverage will be higher from Volusia County to Seminole and Northern Lake County and also along the Treasure Coast with showers moving onshore the Saint Lucie and Martin County coast. Showers will move westward at 10 to 15 mph and produce brief downpours with rainfall from a quarter to half inch in isolated spots. At the beaches the risk of rip currents will continue through sunset with an onshore swell direction creating favorable conditions for rip currents to develop. Rip currents may become stronger and more numerous around the time of low tide between 730 PM and 8 PM this evening. It is always best to swim within sight of a life guard. Beach Hazard Statement
Statement as of 3:47 AM EDT on May 24, 2015

... Beach hazards statement in effect early this morning through
this evening...

The National Weather Service in Melbourne has issued a beach
hazards statement for rough surf which is in effect early this
morning through this evening.

* Hazards... increasing rough surf is expected. Also there will be
a moderate risk for rip currents this morning and again late
this afternoon and evening.

* Timing... this morning through the evening.

* Location... all east central Florida beaches.

* Potential impacts... rough surf will cause hazardous swimming
conditions at east central Florida beaches. There will be a risk
of strong rip currents near jetties and piers.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...
a beach hazards statement is issued when threats such as rough
surf... rip currents and other hazards create life-threatening
conditions in the surf zone. Caution should be used when in or
near the water.

The best safety advice is to only enter the surf near a lifeguard.
Rough surf can often be much more dangerous than it appears
while standing on the beach. Heavy breaking waves can knock you
off a sandbar into deeper water.

If you become caught in a current... never attempt to swim
directly against it... as you will tire quickly. Instead... tread
water and swim at an angle away from the current. Then once out of
the current... swim directly back toward the beach.
