Weather Underground Forecast for Friday, May 25, 2012.

Expect more active weather to develop across the Great Lakes on Friday, as a low pressure system moves from the Upper Midwest into eastern Canada. This system will push a cold front over the Great Lakes and Midwest, producing scattered showers and thunderstorms throughout the day. There is a slight chance that some of these storms will turn severe with strong winds and large hail. Rainfall totals will range from 1 to 2 inches, with over 2 inches likely in areas of severe weather development.

Behind this activity in the West, a low pressure system will move over the Great Basin and into the Southern Rockies. Flow around this system will produce cooler temperatures across the West, while also triggering scattered showers over the Pacific Northwest, northern California, and Intermountain West. Snow showers may develop again across the highest elevations of the Northern Rockies.

Meanwhile in the East, high pressure builds from the Plains, over the Mississippi River Valley, and into the Eastern US. This will keep moisture away to the north, allowing for dry, sunny, and warm conditions. High temperatures will range in the 80s and 90s from the Central Plains through the Eastern Valleys, with parts of the Southern US reaching into the lower 100s.

High Wind Warning

... High Wind Warning remains in effect from 10 am to 10 PM MDT
Saturday...

* timing... High Wind Warning from Saturday mid morning through
early evening.

* Winds... on Saturday... sustained winds of 30 to 50 mph will be
common with peak wind gusts exceeding 75 mph.

* Visibility... visibility may be reduced to a few miles by dust
and sand lifted by the wind.

* Impacts... drivers of high-profile vehicles and motorcycles
should be alert to the danger of these winds especially when
driving along north to south oriented roadways. Also...
individuals planning outdoor activities should take
precautions for strong winds to occur today and Saturday.
Hiking... camping... biking... boating and off-Road activities
may all be affected by these strong winds.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A High Wind Warning means a hazardous high wind event is expected
or occurring. Sustained wind speeds of at least 40 mph or gusts
of 58 mph or more can lead to property damage.

People... especially those with respiratory illnesses... heart
disease... the elderly... and children are recommended to stay
indoors and avoid prolonged outdoor exercise or heavy exertion
due to wind-blown dust.

... Red flag warning remains in effect until 9 PM MDT Saturday for
gusty winds... low humidity... and dry fuels for fire weather zones
200... 202... 203... 207... 290... 292... and 293...

* affected area...

    in Colorado...

    fire weather zone 200... the little snake forecast area...
    fire weather zone 202... the White River forecast area...
    fire weather zone 203... the Grand Junction forecast area...
    fire weather zone 207... the Durango forecast area...
    fire weather zone 290... the Paradox Valley forecast area...
    fire weather zone 292... the North Fork forecast area... and
    fire weather zone 293... the Gunnison basin forecast area.

* Winds... south 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 55 mph this
    afternoon and evening... decreasing to 10 to 15 mph with gusts
    to around 25 mph in the valleys tonight but stronger gusts over
    the higher terrain. Winds will pick up again after 9 am Saturday
    morning..with sustained winds 25 to 35 mph and gusts 55 to 65
    mph by early Saturday afternoon.

* Relative humidity... 10 to 15 percent during the afternoons with
    poor recovery tonight.

* Impacts... fire ignitions will be very difficult to control
    today and Saturday with high rates of spread expected.
    Some improvement in conditions is likely tonight especially
    in the valleys while wind and low humidity should persist
    across the mid-slopes.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions
are either occurring now... or will shortly. A combination of
strong winds... low relative humidity... and warm temperatures will
create explosive fire growth potential.

Please advise the appropriate officials and affected field
personnel of this red flag warning.
