Active Advisory: High Wind Warning (US Severe Weather) Active Notice: Record Report
Tropical Weather: Subtropical Storm Beryl (North Atlantic) Post-Tropical Cyclone Bud (East Pacific) Typhoon Sanvu (Western Pacific)
Weather Summary
Weather Underground Forecast for Saturday, May 26, 2012.

Subtropical Storm Beryl formed late Friday off the Carolina Coast and is expected to move slowly southwestward over the weekend. The storm may maintain tropical storm strength as it approaches the northeast coast of Florida later Sunday night. The storm itself may dump a significant amount of rain on this part of Florida and adjacent areas of Georgia, potentially good news to an area that is currently in an exceptional drought.

The main weather feature over the nation will be a low pressure system moving off the Rockies and into the Plains on Saturday. Flow around this system continues pushing a warm front eastward, over the Plains and through the Midwest. Expect widespread showers and thunderstorms to develop along this frontal boundary, from the Northern and Central Plains through the Great Lakes. Some of these storms will turn severe with strong winds, large hail, and heavy rainfall. Severe thunderstorms are most likely over Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa. By Saturday evening, the tail end of this system will reach the Northeast, bringing lighter and more widespread showers and thunderstorms to the region.

The back side of this broad low pressure system will continue pulling cool air in from Canada. This will allow for rain showers to turn to snow showers at the highest elevations of the Northern Rockies, Intermountain West, and Central Rockies. At the same time, strong and gusty winds will persist for the southern side of this system. In combination with warm and dry conditions, this will maintain high fire danger for the Southwest and Southern Rockies.

High Wind Warning
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 10:07 AM MDT on May 26, 2012

... High Wind Warning remains in effect until 8 PM MDT this
evening...

A High Wind Warning remains in effect until 8 PM MDT this
evening.

* Location... the I-25 corridor and southeast plains... San Luis
valley... Pikes Peak and the northern Sangre de Cristo Mountains
above 11000 feet... southern Sangre de Cristo Mountains... eastern
San Juan and La Garita Mountains... the eastern Sawatch and
western Mosquito Range above 11000 feet... and northern Fremont
County.

* Cause and timing... a strong weather system will move into The
Rockies today spreading high winds across much of south
central and southeast Colorado.

* Wind... south to southwest 35 to 45 mph with gusts from 55 to
70 mph. The strongest gusts will be across the higher
mountains and along the southern Colorado border.

* Impact... strong winds will be a hazard to light weight and
high profile vehicles. Tree limb damage may occur... and light
weight objects will be blown around. Blowing dust will cause
reduced visibilities at times... and any fires could spread
quickly out of control.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

High winds capable of causing power outages and property damage
are expected.

These winds can cause lightweight objects to become dangerous
airborne projectiles. High profile vehicles and vehicles pulling
trailers can be flipped by Crosswinds. Blowing dust can quickly
reduce visibility to near zero... resulting in hazardous driving
conditions and accidents involving motorists taken by surprise.
Blowing dust or sand can also be a health hazard for those with
respiratory problems. Secure lightweight objects. Avoid traveling
on roads with Crosswinds.

Record Report

today. This breaks the previous record of 89 degrees... set in 1942.
