Weather Summary
Weather Underground Forecast for Friday, May 25, 2012.

Expect more active weather to develop across the Great Lakes on Friday, as a low pressure system moves from the Upper Midwest into eastern Canada. This system will push a cold front over the Great Lakes and Midwest, producing scattered showers and thunderstorms throughout the day. There is a slight chance that some of these storms will turn severe with strong winds and large hail. Rainfall totals will range from 1 to 2 inches, with over 2 inches likely in areas of severe weather development.

Behind this activity in the West, a low pressure system will move over the Great Basin and into the Southern Rockies. Flow around this system will produce cooler temperatures across the West, while also triggering scattered showers over the Pacific Northwest, northern California, and Intermountain West. Snow showers may develop again across the highest elevations of the Northern Rockies.

Meanwhile in the East, high pressure builds from the Plains, over the Mississippi River Valley, and into the Eastern US. This will keep moisture away to the north, allowing for dry, sunny, and warm conditions. High temperatures will range in the 80s and 90s from the Central Plains through the Eastern Valleys, with parts of the Southern US reaching into the lower 100s.

High Wind Warning, Wind Advisory
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 12:38 PM MDT on May 25, 2012

... Wind Advisory remains in effect until 10 PM MDT this evening...
... High Wind Warning remains in effect from 10 am to 10 PM MDT
Saturday...

* timing... Wind Advisory through this evening. High Wind Warning
tomorrow morning through evening.

* Winds... southwest winds will continue this afternoon and
evening with gusts over 40 mph. By late afternoon... winds will
be in the 20 to 35 mph range with a few gusts over 45 mph
expected. These winds will be stronger on Saturday with peak
wind gusts of 60 to 70 mph.

* Visibility... visibility may be reduced to a few miles by dust
and sand lifted by the wind.

* Impacts... drivers of high-profile vehicles and motorcycles
should be alert to the danger of these winds especially when
driving along north to south oriented roadways. Also...
individuals planning outdoor activities should take
precautions for strong winds to occur today and Saturday.
Hiking... camping... biking... boating and off-Road activities
may all be affected by these strong winds.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A High Wind Warning means a hazardous high wind event is expected
or occurring. Sustained wind speeds of at least 40 mph or gusts
of 58 mph or more can lead to property damage.

A Wind Advisory means that a significant wind event is expected
or occurring. Winds this strong can make driving difficult. Use
extra caution.

People... especially those with respiratory illnesses... heart
disease... the elderly... and children are recommended to stay
indoors and avoid prolonged outdoor exercise or heavy exertion
due to wind-blown dust.

Fire Weather Warning
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 4:03 AM MDT on May 25, 2012

... Red flag warning remains in effect from 10 am this morning to
9 PM MDT Saturday for gusty winds... low humidity... and dry fuels
for fire weather zones 207... 290 and 292...

* affected area...

   in Colorado...

fire weather zone 207 Durango forecast area...
fire weather zone 290 Paradox Valley forecast area and
fire weather zone 292 North Fork forecast area.

* Winds... south 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 60 mph... decreasing
to 10 to 15 mph with gusts to around 30 mph in the valleys
Friday night. South 30 to 40 mph with gusts over 65 mph on Saturday.

* Relative humidity... 7 to 12 percent. Humidity will rise some
Friday night especially in the valleys... but overall humidity
recovery will be poor Friday night. 9 to 14 percent on Saturday.

* Impacts... fire ignitions will be very difficult to control
Friday afternoon and evening and again Saturday with high rates
of spread expected. Some improvement in conditions are likely
overnight tonight especially in the valleys but wind and low
humidity should persist across the mid-slopes. Winds will
strengthen again mid-morning tomorrow.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions
are either occurring now... or will shortly. A combination of
strong winds... low relative humidity... and warm temperatures will
create explosive fire growth potential.
