A High Wind Warning remains in effect until 8 PM MDT this
evening.
* Location... the I-25 corridor and southeast plains... San Luis
valley... Pikes Peak and the northern Sangre de Cristo
Mountains above 11000 feet... southern Sangre de Cristo
Mountains... eastern San Juan and La Garita Mountains... the
eastern Sawatch and western Mosquito Range above 11000 feet...
and northern Fremont County.
* Cause and timing... a strong weather system approaching The
Rockies this afternoon will spread high winds across much of
south central and southeast Colorado.
* Wind... south to southwest 35 to 45 mph with gusts from 55 to
70 mph. The strongest gusts will be across the higher
mountains and along the southern Colorado border.
* Impact... strong winds will be a hazard to light weight and
high profile vehicles. Tree limb damage may occur... and light
weight objects will be blown around. Blowing dust will cause
reduced visibilities at times... and any fires could spread
quickly out of control.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
High winds capable of causing power outages and property damage
are expected.
These winds can cause lightweight objects to become dangerous
airborne projectiles. High profile vehicles and vehicles pulling
trailers can be flipped by Crosswinds. Blowing dust can quickly
reduce visibility to near zero... resulting in hazardous driving
conditions and accidents involving motorists taken by surprise.
Blowing dust or sand can also be a health hazard for those with
respiratory problems. Secure lightweight objects. Avoid traveling
on roads with Crosswinds.
