Weather Summary
Weather Underground midday recap for Sunday, February 12, 2012.

Unsettled weather developed over parts of the West on Sunday as a trough of low pressure dug across the region. The system kicked up widely scattered snow showers in the Four Corners with moderate snow accumulations. The San Juan Mountains experienced heavy snow with snow accumulations expected to reach up to 17 inches by Sunday night. Snow accumulations in the nearby valley were expected to reach up to 8 inches. Meanwhile, snow accumulations for other mountains in the Four Corners were expected to range between 4 to 10 inches, with local accumulations of up to 14 inches. In addition to snow, isolated thunderstorms developed ahead of the trough in parts of New Mexico. Small hail, brief heavy rain, and small bursts of heavy snow above 7,000 feet were the main impacts with these thunderstorms. Further ahead of this system, a mix of wintry precipitation with sleet, freezing rain, and snow spread into Texas. Snow accumulations were expected to range from 1 to 3 inches. Winter Weather Advisories remained in effect from the Southern Plains through the Mid-Mississippi Valley in anticipation of this system's precipitation.

Elsewhere in the West, lighter snow developed in parts of Idaho and Wyoming, while an approaching Pacific frontal system spread thickening clouds across the Pacific Northwest and northern California coasts this afternoon.

In the East, lake-effect snow showers with periods of heavy snow and blowing snow continued along the Lower Great Lakes Snowbelt. Total snow accumulations of up to 8 inches were expected in parts of the Lower Great Lakes Snowbelt.

Finally, temperatures east of the Continental Divide remained quite cold this afternoon. Areas from the High Plains through the Ohio Valley and the northern Mid-Atlantic experienced highs in the 20s and 30s, the Northeast experienced highs ranging from upper 0s to 30s, and the Deep South only reached into the 40s, 50s, and 60s by the afternoon.

Special Statement
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 6:08 PM PST on February 12, 2012

... An unsettled weather pattern to affect portions of
southwestern California through mid week...

A cold low pressure system currently over northern California will
bring a weak cold front across the forecast area
overnight... initially bringing light showers across San Luis
Obispo and Santa Barbara counties late tonight... then spread
southeastward into Ventura and Los Angeles counties by Monday
morning. The main upper level core will move into interior
California by Monday afternoon. With cold air aloft and increasing
upper level dynamics expected... there will continue to be a threat
of showers... mainly across the interior sections of the forecast
area into Monday night. A slight chance of thunderstorms can not
be ruled out for the mountains of Los Angeles and Ventura counties
as well as the Antelope Valley Monday afternoon and evening. In
addition... there could be brief heavy downpours and small hail
with this storm system. Rain amounts overall will be less than a
quarter of an inch due to limited moisture with this system.
However if thunderstorms do occur..there could be locally higher
amounts. The main impacts with this weather system will be gusty
winds and lower snow levels.

Gusty west to northwest winds will develop Monday behind the front
affecting the immediate coastal areas... mountain and desert
areas... with strongest gusts around 40 to 50 mph range. Although
snow amounts expected will be between 2 to 4 inches with this
system... a Winter Weather Advisory will be in effect from noon
tomorrow through the pre-dawn hours of Tuesday due to low snow
levels and strong winds which will likely have an impact for the
Interstate 5 corridor by Monday evening. Snow levels will range
between 5000 to 5500 feet on Monday... then lower rapidly to 3000
to 3500 feet later Monday night. The most significant snowfall
accumulations are expected on the north facing slopes.

Another cold area of low pressure will drop south out of Nevada
into Southern California by Wednesday afternoon. Moisture will also
be limited with this later system. However... it will also be very
cold and could have the same effects that monday's storm should
have in regards to gusty winds... low snow levels and... and decent
storm dynamics to cause potential convection across interior areas as
well. Improving weather conditions are expected by late Thursday
into the weekend.
