Weather Summary
Weather Underground Forecast for Friday, May 25, 2012.

Expect more active weather to develop across the Great Lakes on Friday, as a low pressure system moves from the Upper Midwest into eastern Canada. This system will push a cold front over the Great Lakes and Midwest, producing scattered showers and thunderstorms throughout the day. There is a slight chance that some of these storms will turn severe with strong winds and large hail. Rainfall totals will range from 1 to 2 inches, with over 2 inches likely in areas of severe weather development.

Behind this activity in the West, a low pressure system will move over the Great Basin and into the Southern Rockies. Flow around this system will produce cooler temperatures across the West, while also triggering scattered showers over the Pacific Northwest, northern California, and Intermountain West. Snow showers may develop again across the highest elevations of the Northern Rockies.

Meanwhile in the East, high pressure builds from the Plains, over the Mississippi River Valley, and into the Eastern US. This will keep moisture away to the north, allowing for dry, sunny, and warm conditions. High temperatures will range in the 80s and 90s from the Central Plains through the Eastern Valleys, with parts of the Southern US reaching into the lower 100s.

Wind Advisory, High Wind Watch
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 3:45 AM PDT on May 25, 2012

... Wind Advisory remains in effect until 4 am PDT Saturday...
... High wind watch remains in effect from 11 am PDT this morning
through late tonight for areas through and below passes and
canyons...

A Wind Advisory remains in effect until 4 am PDT Saturday for the
Kern County mountains and deserts. A high wind watch for areas
through and below passes and canyons remains in effect from 11 am
PDT this morning through late tonight for the Kern County
mountains and deserts.

Winds will increase this morning as a Pacific storm approaches
the region. The strongest winds will be from late morning through
tonight... and will be mainly through and below the favored passes
and canyons of the Kern County mountains.

* Winds: west to northwest 20 to 30 mph with gusts to 55 mph.
Gusts to around 75 mph will be possible below the favored
passes and canyons.

* Timing: winds will increase this morning and continue through
the day before beginning to diminish late tonight. The strongest
gusts will be from late this morning through tonight.

* Locations include: Rosamond... California City... Edwards AFB...
   Mojave... Ridgecrest... Tehachapi... Lake Isabella.

* Impacts: very strong cross winds will occur at times...
especially on Highway 14 near canyons. Areas of blowing dust
are possible. High profile vehicles are highly vulnerable to
these strong cross winds. Major roads that will be affected
include Interstate 5 over the Grapevine... Highway 58 through
and below the Tehachapi Pass... Highway 178 through the
Walker Pass and Highway 14 and U.S. 395 in the desert.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Wind Advisory means that gusts of 45 mph or more are expected.
Winds this strong can make driving difficult... especially for
high profile vehicles. Use extra caution.

A high wind watch means there is the potential for a hazardous
high wind event. Wind gusts of 58 mph or stronger may occur.
Continue to monitor the latest forecasts.

Special Statement
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 8:35 PM PDT on May 24, 2012

... Much cooler Friday and Saturday...

Breezy to locally windy conditions will develop overnight across
the higher elevations of the southern Sierra Nevada... the
Tehachapi Mountains... and High Desert of Kern County.

An abnormally cool low pressure area for this time of the year is
forecast to begin affecting the region by tonight... continuing
into Friday and Saturday. Temperatures by Friday will be some 15
to 20 degrees below normal. This system will bring a chance of
showers and thunderstorms to the southern Sierra Nevada Friday...
with a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms over the central
San Joaquin Valley and the Sierra foothills Friday afternoon and
evening. There will be a chance of showers over the southern
Sierra Nevada Saturday... decreasing Saturday night. The snow level
Friday and Saturday will be around 6000 feet... but could be
locally lower in heavier showers.

Dry weather will return Sunday as the low pressure system moves
east of the region. Temperatures are expected to warm to near
normal Sunday and Memorial Day.
