The National Weather Service in Sacramento has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for snow and blowing snow... which is in effect from 4 PM Wednesday to 10 am PST Thursday.
Snow will be possible over the higher terrain... above 6500 feet by Wednesday afternoon. Snow will increase Wednesday night into Thursday morning becoming moderate to heavy at times. Snow levels will lower to 3000 to 4000 feet by Thursday morning. Accumulations up to 4 inches will be possible above 6000 feet with up to 2 inches above 4000 feet. In addition... southwest wind gusts to 40 mph will be possible over the higher terrain Wednesday night. Snow will decrease Thursday morning with scattered snow showers possible into Thursday afternoon.
A Winter Weather Advisory for snow and blowing snow means that motorists should be prepared for snow covered roads and limited visibilities due to a combination of falling and blowing snow. Use caution when driving... especially in open areas.

A cold low pressure system over the Gulf of Alaska will approach California Wednesday and Wednesday night. As the cold front moves through interior northern California Wednesday into early Thursday... moderate to occasionally heavy precipitation is possible over the mountains.
In the mountains... rain and snow will begin in the Lassen park area and Shasta County mountains by Wednesday afternoon... and shift into the west slopes of the Sierra Wednesday evening. Occasional heavy showers are possible near the cold front as it moves south across the region Wednesday afternoon into early Thursday morning. Snow levels could drop down to around 3500 feet in the Shasta County mountains and down to around 5000 feet over the Sierra by Thursday morning behind the cold front. Showers are expected to linger over the Sierra during the day Thursday. Snowfall accumulations of several inches are possible above 6000 feet between Wednesday and Thursday. Southwest wind gusts up to 50 mph are also possible over the higher terrain with this system. The snowfall and the gusty winds will bring winter driving conditions to the mountains which may impact travel over the higher mountain passes on Wednesday and Thursday.
