... Snow expected in the mountains Wednesday into Thursday...
A cold low pressure system over the Gulf of Alaska will approach
California Wednesday and Wednesday night. As the cold front moves
through interior northern California Wednesday into early
Thursday... moderate to occasionally heavy precipitation is
possible over the mountains.
In the mountains... rain and snow will begin in the Lassen park area
and Shasta County mountains by Wednesday afternoon... and shift
into the west slopes of the Sierra Wednesday evening. Occasional heavy
showers are possible near the cold front as it moves south across
the region Wednesday afternoon into early Thursday morning. Snow levels
could drop down to around 3500 feet in the Shasta County mountains
and down to around 5000 feet over the Sierra by Thursday morning
behind the cold front. Showers are expected to linger over the
Sierra during the day Thursday. Snowfall accumulations of several
inches are possible above 6000 feet between Wednesday and
Thursday. Southwest wind gusts up to 50 mph are also possible
over the higher terrain with this system. The snowfall and the
gusty winds will bring winter driving conditions to the mountains
which may impact travel over the higher mountain passes on
Wednesday and Thursday.
If your plans call for travel into the Sierra or Lassen park area
Wednesday afternoon into Thursday... be prepared for winter driving
conditions. Monitor the latest National Weather Service forecasts
and statements for updates about this storm.
