Weather Summary
Weather Underground Forecast for Saturday, February 11, 2012.

Precipitation will spread across the East Coast on Saturday, while more rain and mountain snow showers are anticipated for parts of the West. A trough of low pressure and associated cold front continue moving eastward across the Eastern Valleys into the Eastern Seaboard. Cool temperatures to the north will allow for snow showers to develop across the Northeast and New England, while rain showers are likely over the Mid-Atlantic states. Rain showers over the Southeastern states should wind down in the early morning hours as the tail end of the system pushes offshore early in the day. Expect the New York metropolitan area to see 1 to 3 inches of snow, while the Washington D.C. area will see a messy combination of snow and freezing rain as high temperatures reach into the lower 40s.

Behind this system, a ridge of high pressure continues to build in from the Plains, pushing cold and dry air in from Canada. This allows for plenty of sunshine to spread from the Plains over the Mississippi River Valley and into the Eastern Valleys. Expect the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest to see highs in the teens again, while the Midwest will see highs in the 20s. Strong winds will accompany this system, pushing windchill values below zero in these areas. The Southern Plains will remain in the 40s on Saturday.

Out West, a trough of low pressure pushes a cold front over the Pacific Northwest and continues pulling moisture onshore with it. This will kick up more rain showers with high elevation snow showers likely in the Cascades. The tail end of the frontal boundary will sweep through California, bringing light rain showers to the coasts and interior valleys. Expect light snow showers in the Sierra Nevadas by Saturday evening.

Special Statement
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 3:00 AM PST on February 11, 2012

... Storm to reach the central California interior Monday...

A Pacific storm will spread rain and mountain snow across the
central California interior Monday... with gusty winds over the Kern
County mountains and deserts Monday afternoon and evening.

A very cold airmass is associated with this storm... and snow levels
will drop rapidly Monday. The snow level at Yosemite will be around
4000 feet Monday... dropping to 3500 feet by Tuesday morning. Snow
levels will be higher to the south... but are expected to lower to
around 4000 feet in the Tehachapi Mountains by late Monday.

Although there is some uncertainty as to expected rainfall and
snowfall amounts... computer models forecast up to a half inch of
rain on the San Joaquin Valley floor for Monday and Monday night. In
the southern Sierra Nevada... snowfall accumulations of 5 to 8 inches
will be possible over the high country. Light accumulations could
fall on the Grapevine and Tehachapi Pass.

The storm also will bring gusty winds to the Kern County mountains
and deserts. Gusts up to 45 mph will be possible over the ridges and
through and below favored passes and canyons... especially Monday
afternoon and evening.

People planning travel into the southern Sierra Nevada and Tehachapi
Mountains Monday and Monday night should be prepared for winter
driving conditions. Carry chains... warm clothing... water and non
perishable food. Allow extra travel time and be prepared for delays
or Road closures. The gusty winds may make travel in the Kern County
mountains and deserts difficult at times for high profile vehicles
such as campers and trailers.

Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio... or your favorite news
source... for updates on this storm. Or visit our web site at
www.Weather.Gov/Hanford.
