Weather Underground midday recap for Monday, February 13, 2012. A storm raced out of the Rockies and into the Plains on Monday, producing a good shot of Winter weather in the Plains and Mississippi Valley. Winter Weather Advisories were posted from eastern Oklahoma through the western Tennessee Valley in anticipation of several inches of new snow. Snow fell as far north as Minnesota and Michigan, but lighter snow was reported the farther north you went. In the warmer air closer to the Gulf Coast, rain fell in Louisiana and Mississippi.

Wet weather also greeted the West Coast as a Pacific storm slammed into California. This storm lacked a tremendous amount of moisture, but it has been a very dry Winter for the state thus far, and any precipitation is very much welcomed. Up to a foot of new snow is possible from this storm in the higher elevations of the Sierra Nevadas when all is said and done.

The East Coast was dry as a high pressure continued to dominate, but the region experienced another chilly day. By the afternoon, temperatures were still in the 20s and 30s for many areas in New England, while temperatures in the 30s were experience as far south as Arkansas. Morning temperatures were in the 20s in northern Florida.

The Northern Plains rose into the 20s and 30s, while the Northwest saw temperatures in the 30s and 40s. The Southwest rose into the 40s, 50s, and some 60s.

... Winter Weather Advisory in effect until 10 PM PST this evening
above 3000 feet...

The National Weather Service in Hanford has issued a Winter
Weather Advisory above 3000 feet for snow and gusty winds... which
is in effect until 10 PM PST this evening for the Kern County
mountains.

* Snow accumulations: 1 to 2 inches at pass levels along
Interstate 5 over the Grapevine... Highway 58 over Tehachapi Pass
and Highway 178 over Walker Pass.

* Elevation: above 3000 feet.

* Timing: the snow will begin tapering off this evening.

* Locations include: Tehachapi... Lebec... Frazier Park

* winds: gusts to around 45 mph may cause blowing and drifting
of snow.

* Impacts: snow will make driving over the Kern County mountain
passes difficult. Expect delays and Road closures.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Winter Weather Advisory means that periods of snow will cause
travel difficulties. Be prepared for slippery roads and limited
visibilities... and use caution while driving.

... Wind Advisory remains in effect until 10 PM PST this evening
below 3000 feet...

A Wind Advisory below 3000 feet remains in effect until 10 PM PST
this evening for the Kern County mountains and deserts.

* Winds: west to southwest 25 to 35 mph. Occasional gusts to 55
mph... especially through and below passes and canyons.

* Locations include: Rosamond... California City... Edwards AFB...
   Mojave... Ridgecrest... Tehachapi... Tejon Pass.

* Impacts: the winds can affect your ability to safely control
your vehicle. Highways most likely to have strong Crosswinds
are 58 from Mojave to Tehachapi Pass... U.S. 395... and
Highway 14. Gusty winds are also likely on the Grapevine
from Tejon Pass southward. On the desert floor... patchy
blowing dust is possible in areas that don't receive rain.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Wind Advisory means that sustained winds of 35 mph or gusts of
45 mph or more are expected. Winds this strong can make driving
difficult... especially for high profile vehicles. Use extra
caution.
