Special Weather Statement
Statement as of 3:59 PM PST on December 03, 2009
... Potential for winter storms to increase next week... The jet stream over the Pacific is expected to strengthen next week leading to an increase of subtropical moisture into the region. This is expected to bring winter storm systems into California and Nevada. The exact timing and strength of the storms remain uncertain however current thinking is that two separate systems will affect the region next week. The first would be associated with a strong cold front early in the week... mainly late Sunday night and Monday. Snow levels with this system will be at valley floors. A second... warmer storm is possible later in the week... Wednesday into Friday. Snow levels would be higher with this storm. With both systems... winds will increase and become strong especially on the Sierra ridges. To summarize... uncertainty in the details remains high and it is too soon to estimate potential rain or snow amounts. The timing and track of these systems may change as new data are analyzed by National Weather Service meteorologists. Local officials... emergency managers and anyone with travel plans next week should continue to monitor the forecasts and further statements. Http://weather.Gov/Reno
