Weather Summary
Weather Underground Forecast for Friday, May 25, 2012.

Expect more active weather to develop across the Great Lakes on Friday, as a low pressure system moves from the Upper Midwest into eastern Canada. This system will push a cold front over the Great Lakes and Midwest, producing scattered showers and thunderstorms throughout the day. There is a slight chance that some of these storms will turn severe with strong winds and large hail. Rainfall totals will range from 1 to 2 inches, with over 2 inches likely in areas of severe weather development.

Behind this activity in the West, a low pressure system will move over the Great Basin and into the Southern Rockies. Flow around this system will produce cooler temperatures across the West, while also triggering scattered showers over the Pacific Northwest, northern California, and Intermountain West. Snow showers may develop again across the highest elevations of the Northern Rockies.

Meanwhile in the East, high pressure builds from the Plains, over the Mississippi River Valley, and into the Eastern US. This will keep moisture away to the north, allowing for dry, sunny, and warm conditions. High temperatures will range in the 80s and 90s from the Central Plains through the Eastern Valleys, with parts of the Southern US reaching into the lower 100s.

Special Statement
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 2:55 PM PDT on May 24, 2012

... Mountain snow and gusty winds tonight through Friday...

An unseasonably strong upper level low pressure system will move
through the area tonight through Friday bringing falling snow
levels and gusty winds to the mountains.

Snow levels will fall from 5500 to 6000 feet this afternoon to
3000 to 3500 feet on Friday morning. Some light accumulations of
an inch or less are expected mainly off of area roadways above
4000 feet to 5500 feet.

Above 5500 feet to the tops of the highest peaks 1 to 3 inches of
new snow is expected. However... in the Siskiyous... Cascades... and
Warner Mountains 3 to 6 inches of snow is generally expected.

North winds on the high peaks such as mc loughlin... Mount
Ashland... Pelican Butte and Mount Shasta will gust 30 to 50 mph
through the period... strongest on Friday afternoon.

Those camping or planning to start their Holiday weekend early in
the mountains should be prepared for colder weather and snowfall
primarily above 5500 feet during this time period. Weather conditions
will begin to improve Friday afternoon as snow levels rise and
temperatures warm closer to normal values.

... Colder with mountain snow today into Friday...

An unseasonably cold upper level low pressure system will drop
into the region today bringing colder temperatures... falling
snow levels... and significant late season precipitation.

High temperatures on both Thursday and Friday are likely to be 15
to 20 degrees below normal... with 40s and 50s in the valleys and
30s and 40s in the mountains.

Snow levels will fall to between 5000 and 6000 feet today,
and then to between 3500 and 5000 feet tonight through
early Friday. Snow accumulations will be primarily confined to
elevations above 5500 feet. 3 to 6 inches of new snow is expected
today through Friday morning in the Cascades and Siskiyous above
5500 feet, and across the east side mountains above 5500 feet
tonight through Friday. A couple inches of snow is possible around
Lakeview late tonight. The high late may sun angle will melt most
snow quickly on Friday.

It will also be very windy on the highest mountain peaks with
gusts expected to be around 50 mph near and above the 10000 foot
elevation level.

Those camping or planning to start their Holiday weekend early in
the mountains should be prepared for colder weather and snowfall
primarily above 5500 feet during this time period. Weather conditions
will improve beginning Friday afternoon as snow levels rise and
temperatures warm closer to normal values.
