Active Advisory: Wind AdvisoryFire Weather Warning (US Severe Weather) Active Notice: Record Report
Tropical Weather: Invest 94 (North Atlantic) Hurricane Bud (East Pacific) Typhoon Sanvu (Western Pacific)
Weather Summary
Weather Underground midday recap for Thursday, May 24, 2012.

Severe weather developed over the North Central US on Thursday, as a low pressure system moved over the Upper Midwest. This created a frontal boundary that stretched from the Great Lakes through the Central Plains and produced moderate to heavy showers and thunderstorms. These storms produced heavy rainfall and strong winds for Minnesota and western Wisconsin. Rainfall totals ranged around 2 inches across the region, with heaviest rainfall reported in Minneapolis, Minnesota with a mid-day total of 2.10 inches. Flood advisories have been issued across the Upper Midwest due to this low moving frontal boundary. Meanwhile, the back side of this system allowed for another front to linger over the Northern Rockies. This system stretched into the Pacific Northwest and produced scattered showers throughout the day. Cooler temperatures over Northern Rockies allowed for snow showers to develop at the highest elevations in western Montana and northwestern Wyoming.

South of this activity, winds increased over the Southwest as a trough of low pressure moved in from the west. This created another warm and dry day for Arizona, New Mexico, and the Great Basin, which kept fire danger high.

In the East, heavy rainfall and strong winds associated with thunderstorm activity continued over southern Florida and the Bahamas. To the north, however, lighter and more widespread showers persisted in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states as a frontal boundary stalled over the region.

Wind Advisory
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 2:20 PM PDT on May 24, 2012

... Wind Advisory now in effect from 5 PM this afternoon to 8 am PDT
Friday...

The Wind Advisory is now in effect from 5 PM this afternoon to 8 am
PDT Friday for the Owens Valley.

* Winds: west winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph possible.

* Timing: strong downslope winds will develop late this
afternoon... remain strong through much of the night... then begin
to diminish around daybreak. The best chance for these winds
reaching the Owens Valley will be early this evening through 500
am Friday morning.

* Locations: Bishop... Westgard Pass... and the Ancient Bristlecone
Pine Forest. The western edge of the Owens Valley will be most
susceptible to the strong downslope winds.

* Impacts: strong Crosswinds may be seen on Highway 395 making
driving difficult. In addition... areas of blowing sand and dust
may significantly lower visibilities.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Wind Advisory means that winds are expected to be strong enough
to make driving difficult... especially for high profile vehicles.
In addition... strong winds over desert areas could result in
briefly lowered visibilities to well under a mile at times in
blowing dust or blowing sand. Use extra caution.

Fire Weather Warning
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 2:42 PM PDT on May 24, 2012

... Red flag warning remains in effect until 11 PM PDT Friday for
strong winds and low relative humidity for fire weather zones
226... 227... 228 and 229...

* affected area... in California... fire weather zone 226 Owens
Valley/southern Inyo Forest... fire weather zone 227 Death
Valley National Park... fire weather zone 228 Mojave Desert and
fire weather zone 229 lower Colorado River valley.

* Timing... red flag criteria is expected to be met as winds
increase across Southern California by late this afternoon
ahead of an unseasonably strong area of low pressure. Gusty
winds will subside slightly in some areas and rh values may
recover briefly overnight to below criteria... but will easily
meet criteria again by late Friday morning areawide.

* Wind... southwest to west 15 to 25 mph with gusts around 35 mph
today... and gusts up near 50 mph on Friday. The east slopes of
the Sierra may see their strongest winds tonight when gusts to
60 mph are possible.

* Humidity... minimum values 8 to 15 percent.

* Impacts... the combination of gusty winds... low relative
humidity and dry fuels will create conditions that are
favorable for extreme fire behavior.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions
are either occurring or are imminent. A combination of strong
winds... low relative humidity... and warm temperatures will create
extreme fire growth potential.
